You can get a similar hot shoe cover from Nikon for around $1.50.

Nokton,
Yes, if you don’t mind imperfect fit that is true.
CHSC-L is designed specifically for LX3/D-LUX4.
It is easy to see the difference when you compare pictures of the two.
Not too many people put their Leicas into generic cases because they are cheap, but, I guess, some do.
Cheers

just fyi: my D90 hot shoe cover does not go all the way on my D-Lux 4 – there is like 1mm left (uncovered). I can post a picture if someone is interested.
Or you could just not use a hotshoe cover at all. Why would one bother? This camera has a limited lifespan built-in. Other than the cosmetic benefits, it’s useless.
As far as cheap cases for Leicas, most real photographers wouldn’t have their Lieca in a case, but up to their eye, or perhaps around their shoulder ready to use. I guess Alex Webb and David Alan Harvey are some of the “not too many” people you refer to.
Leica is a “cult product” and this trigger people to purchase special cases, custom accessories, etc. It is true that the D-Lux 4 cannot be compared to the M series, but it is still a Leica, people pay premium for it and want to have the best of what is available as an add-on.
