Panasonic buying Leica?

"I was on a conf-call today with some of my far eastern colleagues and one of them mentioned that Panasonic was investigating the Purchase of the Leica photographic division from its current owner a certain Austrian guy called Mr. Kaufmann."

    Could there be another party interested?
    Was Minolta the manufacturer of Leica SLRs (in whole or in part) in the past?
    Did Minolta manufacture a Leica M clone in the past?
    Did Sony buy Minolta’s camera division?
    Who would be a more compatible fit at Leica – Pansonic or Sony?
    Who would benefit more from buying Leica – Pansonic or Sony?
    Who would benefit more from buying Olympus – Sony or Panasonic?
    If Nikon becomes a part of Canon, who will be left to compete with Canon?

    This is interesting – I start having doubts that Leica can do it alone. Their PR and marketing are just behind: the latest press releases were nowhere to be found on Leica’s site for hours after dpreview posts.
