Sebastiao Salgado: A Conversation

Who is Sebastiao Salgado? I will just say that his Leica M7 camera set is currently selling on ebay for US $130,680.00:

“Salgado uses three Leica cameras. Most of the time he uses 28mm, 35mm and 60mm lenses (one for each camera body). He uses black-and-white Tri-X film. In low-light situations and indoors he uses T-Max 3200 film, which precludes the need for flash. He does not develop his own film but has a friend do it for him. He does most of his own printing but sometimes calls upon friends to help in this darkroom work also” (source).

Should be noted that the set on sale includes 35, 50 and 90mm lenses, however, Salgado DID shoot a lot on the 28/35/60-set as in the text, only it was on the R-series, not M. R 6.2 mostly I think.

IIRC a set of his ACTUAL cameras (that he has indeed worked with) was sold a few years ago by the Viennese (?) auction house that I can’t remember the name of. Didn’t he donate the money he got for some rain-forest saving thingy?

This is a set given to him by Leica, and now it’s being sold off again. I doubt any film has gone through that.

Quite a humorous pricetag, but then again, anything sold by Photo Arsenal seems to carry a pricetag as exorbitantly high as this one.

Actually I may have seen this on sale before, I’m not sure.

The auction seems to be ended without bidder.

The slideshow is a mix of HCB, Salgado and others.
