What?! The firmware is out before the camera?! That’s not a good sign at all.

I take the opposite view. Its a great sign that Leica is being proactive. Instead of doing updates in 6 months or more and making user wait, Leica seems to be doing its best to ensure that new M9 users have the best M9 experience that Leica can deliver. Kudos to Leica.

Actually, that is the production release level of firmware. They posted of for all the testers that had earlier versions of the firmware on their M9 samples.

The firmware update is out BEFORE the camera. For $7000usd, Leica wants YOU to download and install it yourself?! Why can’t they just do this before they ship the camera out? To me it seems they found a serious issue that can’t wait and in order to maintain their release schedule they will take my money and then tell me to install the firmware on a NEW product myself.

What mystifies me is the decision to “employ” a soul singer to promote a professional photographer’s camera. I mean let’s get real here. There are a thousand and one great “household name” photographers out there who could have done the job and actually have shot some great material with the camera to put up on screen. Don’t get me wrong, I like Seal, but he sure ain’t a photographers photographer. Strange people these Leica guys.
On the firmware issue it is simply that the guys who have had the camera for the last 3 months, one of whom I know well, were not walking around with the latest firmware. No big deal.

I think its just for those that had preproduction models, so that they can get the production firmware as everyone else.

    +1

But take it easy my friend.
Your comments are starting to sound just like mine, when I was ranting about the lackluster coverage and the low prep work on the presentation.

Is this why the keynote seemed unenergetic? Because at the back of their minds, they know that the firmware needs fixing but they’ve already shipped out the M9′s?

I hope, for everyone’s sake (who’s buying this camera), that Carlos Echenique is right. Imagine taking out your camera and wanting to play with it out of the box, but can’t because you have to update it’s firmware. That would be a bummer.

    NikoDoby : please, shut up.
“they will take my money” . No they wont, because you will certainly never be a Leica customer anyway.

Man, it’s digital age. We are lucky, that we can update minor bugs in a minute, not use faulty cam all year…

Can my LEICA M8 or M8.2 be upgraded with the Sensor of the M9?
No. In addition to the sensor, many additional and components have been changed (e.g. the
shutter) an upgrade of the M8 or M8.2 is economically non-sense and therefore not offered.

That is from the FAQ on the website… so, M8.2 is going to stay just that for anyone who wanted to know.

Seal was shilling at the presentation because at the current price point of USD $7000 Leica are targeting, musicians, actors and medical professional wanna be photographers that have more money than sense. Most quality professional documentary photographers will never be able to afford one of these let alone 2 which would be essential for the field. As specialy in todays economic climate with more and more editors cutting day rates, expenses, assignments but still demanding top notch images. I think if they would have priced the M9 around $3500 they would have sold a boat load of them to said manna be’s as well as true pros.

I also would rather have seen a “real” photographer, not Seal. I’m interested in the workings and in what the cam can help me achieve. I don’t need a celeb shill. I wonder if he got a goodie bag with an M9 in it.

Hi “Irregular”, have you tried using Dulcolax? I think that will help you. :) I’m already a Leica owner, how about you? I’m from Leica’s glory days with film! I purchased an M8 when it was first released and was burned very badly by it’s poor image quality and all the fixes Leica tried to make after the fact. I got rid of that camera and have been waiting for a totally new replacement but I’m very skeptical of buying anything new and untested from Leica because of my M8 experience.
