and the point of standing on a M6/M8/M9 is to demonstrate that it is ‘very rugged and reliable’?

i trust nikon / canon / etc to design, engineer, and test their pro cameras for such tasks. have you seen those old folks knocking on the new cars’ panels to feel how solid they are? they are doing crash testing in the showroom.

LR asks “would you step on top of your camera?” i would say no.
not on my D3X or my leicas for that matter.

And neither have i stood on my M9, but I have trashed my M6 around quite a bit and it performs like a champ.

I am not sure what was wrong with my statement? Did you misinterpret my statements to suggest that I thought the D3X includes a built-in flash? I suppose that is a confusion understandable on your part since the two sentences are next to each other, but what I literally said, and intended to say, is exactly what I said. I don’t think you can stand on a D3x (first of all, you try balancing on top of it), and it is also true that the Nikons also make cameras that have pop-up flashes. I guess for folks who may not read as carefully I should be more careful and have said “Nikon also makes some cameras that have pop-up flashes that can be damaged.” I am an attorney by day and I didn’t think I would have to be on red alert here on the Leica Rumor forum! But, to get back to the question, have you stood on your Nikon D3x and confirmed it is ok to do so as well? I admite I do not have a D3x, I have only the D700 and the D300, and I have never tried to stand on top of them.

Hate to break the news to you M! but I have personally seen Justin pull that stunt with an M8 as well. No wires, no bracing. Just him, a digital M, and his entire weight bearing down on top of it. He’s more in danger of twisting his ankle than seriously damaging the camera (although, with the M9 there is a high probability of scratching the paint job – I miss the M8′s hard chromed finishes)!

have to agree with M! that what he’s doing doesn’t show any relevance to the capability of the Leica as a camera — albeit it does show it can withstand a lot of force / pressure, but so does tons of other gear. maybe he’s proving that an M9 can also be a workhorse for photographers who beat their camera bad(?), that IDK..

it’s not just you Ian, that girl totally has no credibility, none the less any idea what she’s talking about.. this was not an interview, but a Q&A portion.. that Leica guy was so mesmerized with her that he just answers questions.. he thinks he’s doing a good job promoting Leica, which truthfully he hasn’t..

if that was for sale, aside from the fact that it may have surface scratches from the ridges of that guy’s shoe, I doubt that it would cost significantly lower than a brand new one.

Not that this issue is at all relevant to photography . . . but I don’t think you can really stand on a D3x. The Nikons have the pop-up flash that can be damages from too much pressure from top, and the LCD display on top (depending on where you stand) can certainly crack. the plastic on/off switch can also be damaged. That said, my D300 has flown off of my snowmibile and bounced off of the snowmobile behond me doing 20mph and it still worked fine. If you trashed around a range finder I would not be as confident in the focus alignment.

it is absurd for a leica representative to do such a ‘stunt’.
chances are, he had his hand on the counter and spreading the weight anyways.
i am sure i can stand on my D3X as well. nothing special.
there is no marketing value in showcasing someone standing on a camera. perhaps if you have an elephant standing on one, and putting an M9 thru a stampede or bull run and survive, i will be impressed.
