wrong James. You need one to put on your coffee table. I’ll be ordering 4 – and I’ll be using them as legs…………I’m living a cinematic lifestyle but I’m bored of Ikea.
That’s odd, steve. I was going to take out all the elements and use one as a coffee mug and the other as a pencil holder. Table legs are just a step too far.
No but really, these lenses look amazing. Obviously I’m not going to stick them on my M4 but for the world of cinema, it will be very interesting,
Personally ‘ll be buying ten of these, all of the longets available focal length. I’m having my S2 cast into a perfect crystal clear sphere of polycarbonate and use them on my private bowling alley in the basement. The bowling lane itself I had inlaid with 21,345 M8 shutter blades in a rather fetching mosaic design. The comfy chair in the corner is upholstered with the skins of 300 limited edition red croc leather R4′s.
These aren’t Leica lenses. This is a quote from Michael Bravin of Band Pro on reduser.net, after a lot of speculation from other posters that these were made by Leica:
“Nope, interesting idea, but nope nonetheless.
Adding the word Leica to another word or using it alone will not produce the manufacturers name.
Oh and spelling it backward or using an anagram won’t get you there either”
They may not be labeled as Leica, but they will be produced by Leica – I have no other explanation of why Dr. Kaufman was at the official event and all other Leica links. They may even start a new factory, on a new location, but they will use the know how and technology of Leica.
Second quote from Bravin: “I can assure you that Leica Camera AG is not making the Mystery Primes. You owe no apology to Dr Kaufman (at least as far as I know). [referring to comment concerning Kaufman’s appearance.” This is a quote from one of the thread users (not affiliated with either BandPro or Leica: “After a bit of detective work my guess would be K+S Optics or Lothar Kölsch, as he seems to have revolutionized the Leica Summilux lenses with aspherical elements. Who else would be able to come up with a multiple-aspherical design other than someone who was the chief designer of Leica lenses for years who left Leica and became independent, and who states on his homepage that he’s looking for more lens breakthroughs? And I guess double aspherical elements plus “blank pressing” make it possible.” It appears to me that the company may be directed, or affiliated, to Kaufman and previous Leica engineers, but it isn’t Leica – it is probably K&S Optik (http://www.koelsch-schroeder.de/english/index.html). If this is the case, is Leica still going to continue making cinema lenses, or will they be produced and designed separately by ex-Leica designers? This is the link to the thread: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38975
Also this comment (http://leicarumors.com/2010/01/05/4k-“mystery-lenses”-bandpro.aspx/): “In development for three years by an international team of prominent optical and mechanical lens designers (anonymous sources point to alumni of Panavision, Leitz, Leica Canada, as well as involvement by Otto Nemenz and Band Pro), it was one of the industry’s best kept secrets.”
Anyway this reduser thread is interesting (and very long) – I will post it online. I will try to contact Leica for an official statement.

Not sure why you keep blogging about these cine lenses. They’re of little or no interest for most people, right?

Yu could be right, or they are trying to cover it up after the word got out. Somebody that works for Leica registered the domain name cw-sonderoptic.de (http://leicarumors.com/2010/01/04/2010-the-mistery-will-be-revealed-new-leica-cinema-lenses.aspx/).
