This is it - it allows you to change the shutter speed with your thumb:

Nice idea, but changing the shutter speed in this way wouldn’t correspond with the LED arrows (> • <) of the ligth meter anymore. if the light meter says turn left (<) for more speed, you would have to scroll right. not that complicated, but one reason why LEICA changed the speed dial direction since the M6 TTL.

Good idea; I’ve never really been happy with M speed dials since my beloved M5 – but this makes sense.

    to neotypus:

You are wrong, it does correspond perfectly with the led arrows.
if you follow the led indication in your viewfinder in the direction it points to and then turn the M80turn it is as zen as it can be. (or even more then leica gave you)
Just led the leds guide you and the M80Turn will do the trick.

I already turn the shutter speed dial with my thumb… not sure what the utility of this is, maybe there for some I guess. Where is it made? Hope not in China.

you’re right. the thoothed wheel changes the direction, but by using the thumb (instead of the forefinger at the speed dial) the direction correspond with the LEDs again – right? :)
