Update: the black M9 is now labeled as "Usually ships within 1 to 4 weeks". A reader has ordered one on 1/15/09 from Amazon and he received an email back with an estimated delivery of 1/29-2/9 (thanks for the update J):
The steel grey M9 is now back to "signup to be notified" (and not taking orders). It seems that Amazon only take orders when they think they will have something coming soon:

I also ordered a Leica M9 body. The other day, I received an email from the Amazon Concierge stating that the approximate shipping date of this camera would be March 1st. Today I received an email from Amazon canceling my order stating that “Due to a lack of availability from our suppliers, we will not be able to obtain the Leica M9:” Does this mean there will be a newer model or that it’s going to take forever to get the camera? I don’t know, but due to them canceling my order, I also canceled a back-ordered Leica Summilux 1.4 ASPH lens. I’m very disappointed and disillusioned in the Leica brand right now.
I seriously doubt it is due to a new model being released . . . it’s just that Leica can’t make as many of the M9s (or the 50mm Summilux for that matter) to meet the demand.
