Yes, the rumors were true. Today Hasselblad released a Leica S2 challenger, the H4D-40. And yes, I will link to PhotoRumors.com again for all the details. Enjoy!

Wasn’t the H3D-39 of similar spec and already cheaper than the S2?
Not sure this is comparing apples with apples. The difference (advantage) of the S2 is that it is roughly the size and ergonomics of a 35mm SLR. I think the reason people will by the S2 because it is revolutionary in getting a medium format into a small body. Much like the M9 is revolutionary in getting a full frame sensor into a compact M body. Leica is about quality and size optimization. Sure you can get more megapixels with a bigger camera but that comes with the down side of having the extra size and weight. Also, the S2 appeals to those people who want to take an incredible camera with them to shoot normal pictures (albeit those with a lot of money) and the Hassie will not appeal to them due to its size.
Leica S2 the size of a 35mm SLR..??? WHAT??? The thing is HUGE. With lenses attached it’s about the same size as the Hassy except almost double the price (with lens). Hassy will eat Leica’s lunch on this one.
I disagree, I think the S2 is a lot more managable than the Hassie. As always, time will tell.
The S2 and Hasselblad are two different animals.
A nice camera to be sure, but obviously an evolutionary design addition building on the previous concept. It will probably hold on to existing owners but I wonder how much it attract a possible S2 purchaser who is new to the big sensor MF format camera systems and looking at both.
The Shutters/shutter speeds are certainly an advantage to the S2. The S2 again is just a different NEW concept and the results from both will be more than satisfactory. The S2 concept is more appealing to me as a rugged field camera.
For $500 you can go and buy a Hass C/M 500 body. You can either choose to outfit the C/M 500 with a Phase One back, or better yet shoot film (which, if scanned right, gives you more than 100MP of resolution). Just saying, if you don’t have the money . . . The S2 is big and heavy, for sure.
@David
I fully agree with you!
You need to consider how each treats their customers! Admit that your camera had a tiny knock months and months earlier and Leica will immediately invalid your complete warranty even over totally unrelated problems needing repair under warranty. I know – they did this to me. Honesty pays? Not with Leica it doesn’t.
Buyer beware.
Sorry but the Leika S2 with lens is as fat as an Hasselblad !
