ReallyRightStuff now has the Modular L-Plate and grip system for Leica M8/M9 available for pre-order (see original post here). Shipments will start in June, 2010:
- Replacement base with dovetail
- Optional L-plate component
- Optional Grip
The replacement base plate completely replaces the Leica base. This replacement base has an integrated dovetail for mounting in a Really Right Stuff clamp. Use the base alone as a conventional plate, or add an optional vertical component to create the L-plate, or add an optional grip. Both vertical components screws precisely to the base using the included hex key:

Just ordered the complete set. 250 dollars is cheaper than I thought and equals the cost of Leica’s oem grip, whose design of course can’t compare to this one.
Looks like an impressive design and manufacture. Does the grip offer any storage?
It reminds me of the accessories that Leica use to make for the SL2mot w/motor – simple, practical, well thought out and well made.
Wow. This is nice, but can’t you use a tripod without that thing? I have a thumbs up grip on my M8.2. Will that interfere? I eventually would like to get a tripod for my Nikon D90, a future D700 or D3s and the M8.2 or M9. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a sturdy yet light tripod?
Lainer, as for your tripod question; Carbon Fiber is the lightest with high-grade aluminum next. Gitzo (I’ve had mine for years) has a good line-up as does Manfrotto and others.
But what can throw that off is a good tripod head which can be relatively heavy. Just as importantly, is to remember to buy for stability for the heaviest equipment you’ll use – and that the height with legs extended should come up to your chin (or close) as any center column extension can affect stability.
The last thing to consider would be do you need the tripod to get low to the ground? If so, one with legs that spread wide and with a removable center column would be the way to go. Hope some of that helps.
