“Like a Leica”

The artist Tom Sachs (via collete.fr) has the following item for sale on his website:

like a leica Like a Leica

like a leica 2 Like a Leica

Here is the description:

"Like a Leica

Limited edition of 12.

Tom Sachs is a sculptor from NYC. He's known for his elaborate recreations of various modern icons such as Hello Kitty, NASA, Chanel, Hermès, etc... This is an original signed and numbered piece handmade at the artist's studio in New York City. This 12.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital ELPH pocket-camera has been rebranded into a Leica.

Engravings, paint and customized stickers ensure the experience is better than genuine."

The price? €2,100 / $2,500. Memory card not included. I am not sure what to say... Let's put it this way - I like the NASAblad and the Incinolet much better.  Actually, I am sure of one thing - all 12 pieces will be sold.

Maybe he got a permission from Leica or maybe it is ok when it is considered art?

I like his Hasselblad better. And if he had made it an M camera … I would have liked this one. But a plastic Leica … no thanks.

You know the Nasablad looks interesting with its weird steampunk aesthetic. Whether you like it or not you could understand why someone would call it an art-piece.

But this looks like and is nothing more than a low end compact with a poor paintjob. Giving him the benefit of the doubt perhaps its an ironic fake? Even so 2500 bucks?

Maybe he is just trying to make fun of Leica’s limited editions which usually sell for a lot of money.

    @LR Admin,
these artists sometimes get away with these ‘artworks’, including many items like Hello Kitty Chain Saw, Bleeding Chanel logos, etc etc. if colette is selling it, they must have went thru their legal department first.

@those who think this is retarded and don’t understand this art, it’s fine.
it is quite hilarious, especially what the artist is trying to poke fun of.

I think it’s quite obvious he’s exposing the fact Leica products are expensive, often just because of the brand name. The D-Lux 4 vs LX-3 price difference is a clear demonstration of this fact.

Since this is a site for Leica fans, some people will strongly disagree with this, it’s just like posting Apple criticism on macrumors.com. But disagreement is not an excuse to ridicule the guy, his criticism isn’t unfounded.

The ultimate irony is that “Tom Sachs” is more a brand than “leica” is. Had anyone else done this they would not have been able to charge €2100 for it and no one in their right mind would have tried to legitimize paying such a price. Just because it is labled “Tom Sachs” people pay for it.

These artists are simply more accomplished thieves than corporations.
