A very good guess of what’s next for the Leica D-Lux 5

Panasonic's website leaked the long expected Panasonic LX5 (replacement of the LX3) which should give us a pretty good idea of what the next Leica D-Lux 5 will look like (probably announced at Photokina):

Main differences between the LX5 and the older LX3 version:

  • the LX5 has 3.8x zoom 24-90mm (the LX3 has 2.5x and ends with 60mm)
  • LX3 has 8 elements in 6 groups, 4 aspherical lenses and 4 aspherical surfaces. LX5 will have 10 elements in 9 groups, 3 aspherical lenses and 5 aspherical surfaces.
  • LX5 wit 80 to 12800 ISO (the LX3 80 to 3200)
  • Shutter speed of the LX5 is 1/4000 sec (up from 1/2000sec of the LX3)
  • It records in HD 60p (sensor output is 30p) AVCHDlite
  • Optional electronic and optical viewfinder
  • LX5 will have step zoom
  • both cameras will have almost identical weight, slightly bigger dimensions
  • LX5 will have a Orientation Detector
  • LX5 will add also Movie Zoom, Wind noise cut and a direct movie button

Those will be the Panasonic LX5 accessories (click for larger view):

Too bad the sensor isn’t size of m43 which was what rumors said it would be

What is the origin of a rumour about a 4/3 Leica?
In my opinion such a camera would make the X1 obsolete. I really don’t see the point… to me it just looks like wishful thinking.

as I said, at that point it was not clear if the LX5 will have a m4/3 sensor or those will be two different cameras

A minor evolution perhaps – and one that could be a backward step (the longer zoom may actually inhibit iq in the overall picture) it will be interesting to see results of the new camera to compare, but I doubt many lx3/dl4 owners are young to go nuts upgrading.

That is all about a Panasonic camera isn’t it? So who says that this makes the way to us with a red dot on it?

  6. Posted July 17, 2010 at 1:50 pm | Permalink

What makes you think that they won’t – they have been doing it for years with Panasonic p&a models, the question is if they will do it for Photokina (I think so) or later.

I doubt very much those that have the LX3 as a backup camera will upgrade. As a one camera only this is interesting but that is as far as it goes I think for me. Looks a good camera though.

“What makes you think that they won’t”

The X1 makes me think so. Maybe this will be the X2. However… the LX5 isn’t available yet… It’s far too fresh for Leica to stick the dot on it.

Is there a Leica version of every Lumix???

“Is there a Leica version of every Lumix???”
No. But there has been a Leica version for every LX Lumix so it is pretty much expected that their will be a D-Lux 5 out of this.

Of course they could skip this one but that would be on the improbable side.

“The X1 makes me think so. Maybe this will be the X2″
    The X1 is $2000.00!
The D-Lux line has always been less than half that price.

  11. Maiko
    Posted July 17, 2010 at 5:49 pm | Permalink

So tell me who would buy an X1 if he could get the above for half the price?

Well okay… I would but that is another topic.

The next thing is a 4/3 camera with its own interchangeable lens system, build in viewfinder and OLED display because Leica is well known for offering a full range from cheap to expensive. This would cannibalise the M as an LX 5 Leica would do ithe same with the X1.

Every LX got a red dot… well, but now there is the X1.

  12. Stepper
    Posted July 17, 2010 at 7:49 pm | Permalink

The way I see it, the X1 is meant for a totally different market as compared to the D-Lux line. The D-Lux was meant to be a sort of entry levelish Leica on the consumer grade end. The X1 is a $2000.00 camera with a fixed, single focal length lens. Most consumers don’t (and never will) understand the point of having such an expensive yet limited (to their eyes) camera. Most of the people who do understand the X1 also understand the difference a larger sensor makes.

I think the D-Lux line of cameras will not significantly interfere with X1 sales. But if Leica does come out with a 4/3′ds camera then the X1 will take a hit – not the M9.

Specs are a bit underwhelming. As someone said already, the longer zoom range might hurt overall image quality. Also, ISO 12,800? On a small sensor camera?? Ehh…

  14. Eric Pepin
    Posted July 18, 2010 at 3:56 am | Permalink

um, X1 is APS with great performace if i remember correctly… this will just be another better then average point and shoot with the leica name stamped on after the fact.

  15. Maiko
    Posted July 18, 2010 at 5:34 am | Permalink

@Eric: The picture performance (except the lens distortion!) might be nice… Everything else is either okay or bad. The high price comes from the ‘Made in Germany’ and the low manufacturing capacity. Aperture/shutter speed dials… argh, battery cover… aargh, auto focus… aaargh, focus dial… aaaarrgh, shutter release button… *****, menu dial… *****^2

We’ll see! I think there is just not enough space between the V- Lux 20 and the X1 as well there isn’t enough room between the X1 and the M9 for another system with interchangeable lenses. Besides Leica is not very well known for offering something for everyone… they’re well known for their high price tags.

Malko, are you a photographer or tech person? To even begin to ask why you’d want an x1 over an lx5 is ridiculous to those who use dslr’s and wance great performance in a slim package. The dl line and x1 line are VERY VERY different. The better question is why would one buy this rebadged as a leica for half the price of the x1?

  19. maiko
    Posted July 20, 2010 at 6:13 pm | Permalink

I am a person who is interested into photo technology and I own an X1.

In the near past there has been the M8 and everything below was build by Panasonic. Now there is the X1. Of course, if you compare the cameras there still good reasons for an X1 but not much.
The X1 is absolutely comparable with the current Olympus Pen!
The results are a bit better and the interface concept is different (I prefer the very very simple one… but that’s just me). However the build quality of the Pen is better. The X1 is perfect when you buy it and a few days later. But you’ll see it is just bad.

What do you think will happen if Leica offers another camera comparable to the Pen?
We (people who surf on LR) are geeks and nerds. We know about the Panaleica thing but the people Leica earn the money from… they don’t. They just trust the brand and they see that there is a nice looking cheaper camera with a lot more functions.

By the way… I bet Panasonic build better menu dials which wont run loose after a few weeks.

Maybe I’m wrong but I just don’t see the space between the V-Lux 20 and the X1.
