Dr Leitz, a Protestant, and his daughter saved thousands of life in the so-called “Leica Freedom train” up to 1939 when Hitler closed all the borders.
They saved lives of families, parents, cousins, etc., but also friends of family. Thus thousand were send all over Europe and United States, Ernst Leitz pretending they needed these people to work for him outside of Germany.
There is a book telling the story, it can be found on websites….

Well, it’s really good to hear the information about the Leitz family doing whatever they could. Too, it’s interesting to see the other ‘bit’s', really, it is.

All the Leica PR from the past and present – would be much more interesting if they actually had a camera system other than the M. No, the S2, with it’s astronomically and comically high price with it’s still incomplete lens line, doesn’t count. Nor do the Pana-Leicas. I mean a real hold in your hand interchangeable lens camera with system lenses that is actual ‘motor or series -sequence’ capable, that is weather sealed, etc.

What we have been seeing the last ten months is all they have – nothing more. In fact, they have less product now, after the death of the R and NO replacement, than theyv’e had for years. I want to see them DO SOMETHING. Not publish a gee-whizz-look-at-this-or-that-photographer-shooting-with-a-Leica and isn’t it special.

Come on Leica, show us something. Give us a REAL alternative that is more versatile than the ancient M and doesn’t cost a left ‘knutzen’. Build some new history.

In efforts to sound less controversial, I agree that Leica hasn’t bought out much over the years, but to their credit, I kinda like it that way! With Nikon, Canon and Sony replacing camera left right and center, it definitely leaves Leica strong where they are at. It is a premium product like a Rolls Royce.

If they end up like lesser (lesser than DSLRs) Olympus, Samsungs and Sony in the mirrorless market, Leica will be a different company altogether. The are definitely not the Mc Donalds of camera market! If you want something along of that, then go with the Fuji X100. I’m pretty sure they will be replacing that one a lot more often.

My intention is not based in controversy. I too, like that Leica has taken it’s own route.

But it can’t be ignored that they have stumbled along with various owners over the last 30 years. All of which have tried to maintain the marque, with just enough success to maintain it. The Pana-Leicas bring some money, some new customers, and spread the marque.

Having used and invested $$$ in M and R systems and used them as photo tools and not collectables or ‘jewelry’ as some call them. I can say that for a broad and capable outdoor, ‘natural resource’ recording tool, the M doesn’t make it – the R did. It’s that simple. I honestly don’t know if Leica and it’s current owner are interested, willing or capable of providing the equipment they used to, and many of still want.

That’s okay if that’s their goal, but there is something really special looking through a Leica lens, finding the desired focus plane and recording the image. It is awesome and the M doesn’t give that experience.
