“From Past, Present to Future” Leica + Magnum event in Paris on June 21st

Thorsten Overgaard posted some more information on the upcoming Leica M9-P announcement on June 21st, 2011 (+/- 1 day based on your location):

Leica Camera AG and Magnum Photos will present the event "From Past, Present to Future" in Paris on June 21, 2011. I will be there and shall write about it to the degree I find it useful. With the slogan "Experience another decisive moment from Leica & Magnum" I fear new interesting products will be launched that will rip my bank account.

Leica Camera and Magnum Photos announced a technological and photographic collaboration earlier this year. See also the related video "Leica & Magnum: Past Present Future".

A new 21mm f/3.8 lens plus a M8/9 firmware update are also expected to be announced on that date. Some more Leica M9-P details:

  • No Leica logo or M9 marking
  • Classic Leica writing on top plate
  • Chrome finish
  • Vulcanite cover
  • Sapphire LCD glass

Well if all Leica offers is an ‘unbadged-no red dot, saphire glassed screen M’ with new covering etc.,, I mean, really, as a Leica user I’ll be totally unimpressed. For more $$$ you get a more ‘retro-look’ M9 with features (saphire glass) that could be argued you should already get without spending extra cash.

It’s hard to keep drinking the same old ‘Leica-drink’ with the main main product design retro-grading. I’m just waiting for the moment when I can say to Leica, great design, great innovation, excellent useability in a variety of situations and subjects – and it doesn’t cost a ‘left knutzen’…………..and it’s not an S camera.

the chrome finish makes it more attracting to those who has chrome barrel lens.. the steel grey M9 + chrome lens doesn’t necessarily match.. personally I don’t mind it, but there’s folks out there who certainly do..

also the vulcanite on the steel grey is one feature that received a lot of complaint.. people bought the black M9 over the steel grey just because they didn’t like the vulcanite on the latter..

if you’re looking to buy a Leica, be prepared to pay a premium.. if you’re wishing for the ultimate design and function without costing a limb or two, it will never happen..

After 40 plus years using Leica and other equipment, I understand what Leica is and how they got to this point and the cost involved.

My point is that they are currently choosing to stay as a company that is living on past accomplishments (as they have for years) in their own design and tech and adapting existing tech to it, like putting a sensor into the existing focusing platform. That is an accomplishment in being successful at playing catch-up. It works as it has for years only now with a digital sensor.

When they came out with the M, it WAS new, though based on existing tech – but it was MUCH better. That was 1954. It’s 2011. I don’t think my current expectation is unrealistic based on that alone. I’m happy for all those who yearn for a more color-coordinated M and I’m really glad Leica is so ‘in tune’ with those demands.

      those images are not manipulated

Well, I know of no new products. The camera Seal wears is clearly an M9-based camera but could just as well be an a-la-carte version he had made to personal taste (which then everyone can do, even before June 21).

My only hope is espresso and a new 50mm Summicron-M ASPH. That would make me one happy little bunny.

The pictured camera is not a-la-carte piece, it is already in mass production in Germany for the upcoming announcement.

@LR Admin: Where do you have this information from?
I mean… you have some kind of history in making facts up. This makes it difficult to evaluate the info.

@Maiko: making stuff up? How did you come to this conclusion? You must be confusing me with some other site. Anyway, you don’t have to believe me, you can just wait till June 21.

I usually get my answers from my crystal ball :)

      Hi Thorsten,
can you please tell me how can you order a-la-carte m9 (i saw on your site ages ago). I’ve sent many mails to Leica asking, pledging them for price quotation, but I never got any response from them.

      Unlucky one.

      • http://www.overgaard.dk Thorsten Overgaard

I think the way to do it is to send in the camera and ask them to do what is wanted. They will then send a quote (as they always do when you ask for a camera to be serviced), and then you know the prices. And at that stage they would also tell which things might eventually not be available. For example few leather types, two or three only, will stick to the grey body.

Or go there and walk into the Customer Service department at Solmser Gewerbepark 8 in Solms (few kilometers from the actual factory).

Is the 2006 50mm f/1.4 Summilux ASPH due for an update yet?

Any news that a new one will be announced?

    • http://leicarumors.com LR admin

I don’t think the 50 lux will be replaced any time soon – it’s one of the best Leica lenses available today (IMHO).

yes its one of the best lenses they make…..I’ve been waiting since 2009 for one….very hard to get

        • ConorB

Hey Brian, are you checking with a number of dealers or being loyal to just one?
Not sure where you are based, but an unfulfilled order from 2009 seems unusual, even for the almost permanently “out-of-stock” 50 Lux.
I ordered mine in mid-April 2010 and received it at the beginning of October 2010… a little under 6 months.
Stick at it anyway, it’s a super little lens.
