leica m9 m9 p upgrade program Leica M9 >M9 P upgrade program coming to the US

I am not sure about other countries, but a new Leica M9 to M9-P upgrade program will be launched for the US in the next few weeks. I don't know if the upgrade program will include also changing the vulcanite leatherette of the M9. Stay tuned for the details.

As I know this was also announced for Switzerland, so you can conclude that this is for all country covered by Leica. However I have no information regarding in what consist the upgrade and at what cost. It was just indicated that this will be possible for M9 users and that the upgrade explanation will come out in July.

The LFI magazine issue of July says that “Leica Customer Service is soon to offer an upgrade option (…) to replace the back glass of the camera with sapphire glass”.

It doesn’t mention a top case replacement. Such a replacement would be ok on a black M9, but the upgrade would need to be more extensive on a grey M9 as the M9-P is chrome-plated in silver (top case, bottom cover, controls and dials?).

Upgrade? What upgrade? Leica will peel off the red dot for you and charge $1000 for that? Give me a break. Give me Live View, higher res screen and hybrid viewfinder, then we can talk “upgrade”. I feel Leica has sold its soul and became a fashion accessory. Soon they will have a full spread in Vogue with a “hottest accessory for this summer – Leica 9M-p”. What a joke!

Won’t be surprised, since the M9 already did that in the Neiman Marcus catalog not too long ago…

Hey Andreas Kaufmann, you come out with the M9p to get some PR and cloak it in the Magnum ‘agreement’ to make it extra special. Then, once again, you expose the ridiculous nature of it when you announce afterwords that you can get an ‘upgrade’?

You announced the ‘new’ system camera to be ‘unveiled’ at Photokina 2012 after you show the M9p, “it may have a APS sensor, or bigger”…..”Leica will always take it’s time…” So you have a camera planned and you also state that the sensor size is still being decided depending on what’s available????? Huh? Don’t you have to design a lens-line around the sensor size???? You, the snails paced ‘we take our time” Leica??? You will have this for Sept. 2012??? Do you really have an idea or is it just ‘marketing misdirection?’

Because, it reads like the same old ‘Leica-speak’; ooo-wow! The M9p! Now an upgrade after a lot of people are p-offed. Before that before photokina 2010, it was maybe the R solution – we’ve designed something new with VW/Audi’s cheif designer – and then oh look!!! It’s a glorified M9T???? Hey, I’m just asking, anything is possible, right???

Mjah, passing on that upgrade, perfectly happy with my M9 as it is.

Saw a flier about this in Germany.
I think it was €750 for just the glass.
€1200 for glass and top and bottom plates.
It apparently includes a warranty extension by one year.

I might go for the glass.
My M9 is starting to brass nicely, so why mess with that?…
    : )
