Leica Camera released new firmware update v.1.174 for M9/M9-P cameras that should fix the SD card compatibility issues reported few months ago:
Leica Camera has become aware of customers experiencing compatibility issues related to select types of new memory cards when used in the Leica M9. This Firmware 1.174 fixes a bug that led to the faulty behaviour. Generally Leica recommends to use SD / SDHC Cards from San Disk. Until further notice, the following SD-Cards are still not recommended to use, because some misbehaviour occurred in the test phasis.
- San Disk Extreme Pro SDHC I UHS-1 (all card sizes)
- San Disk Extreme HD Video SDHC I (all card sizes)

comes very timely as last sunday i lost a full day of pictures because of this issue.
Interestingly, the card that caused this is a SD Extreme Pro 16 gb, exactly the one the advice to still not use. 100 euros to the bin for now…
So Leica basically did not fix the problem, there still could be an issue with two of the most common SD cards out there.
Memory cards not working and/or incompatible with several hardware combinantions are a strange but very common issue if considering the whole world of information technology.
Also, what did Leica actually update? If it works, do not change it!
There was a particular freeze/buffer issue with the latest SanDisk Ultra series – in particular the 16Gb. I’m sure there were other cards with a similiar issue. I’m hoping they addressed some weird internal buffer issues when the SD is nearly full – I had a weird issue last ween using a Leica-recommended Lexar card, requiring me to pull the battery to recover.
Uh, thanks Michael.
Fortunately my father and I haven’t got any Leica-recommended SD Card!!!
Some 16GB unnknown brand and a pair of very rough 16 Samsung. They work. Still.
I reported my issue to Leica – hopefully they can confirm whether or not the latest firmware fixes the buffer overflow type issue like the one I encountered.
well, with the new firmware and a San Disk 16 gb ultra 15mb/s i´ve just had yet again issues with some of the pictures being recorded at 0 kb. Frustrating for a camera that costs 5000 euro if not more.
Just seems to be a royal pain in the arse’ no matter how it shakes down.
It’s unexceptable that anyone should lose images due to a software/disk/compatibility issue although there will be ‘accidents’, etc. It does seem that Leica cannot get a complete grip around it.
Maybe Stephan Daniels’ comment about an M digital life/product cycle being between three and half and four years. Easier for them to do that than to design or have a ‘fixable’ issue – and only for $8K per body.
Sounds like a deal to me. Or hey, maybe they really should re-design the M from the ground up instead of squeezing or adapting new tech into/for an old shoe.
