Leica MP Taiwan Centenary Establishment Limited Edition Camera

A new Leica MP limited edition was announced in Taiwan (Republic of China) to commemorate the country's centenary establishment. Only 100 pieces will be produced. The price is NT$360,000 (US$12,185):

"Comes in Leica's original wood-made box, the camera features a copper and zinc-alloy body, while the the upper and lower lids are military grey, which resembles the Leica M2 Grey film camera that was launched in 1960. The Leica MP also uses "Vulcanite" leather that was on the Leica M8.2. Another special feature is the engravings of "MP100 - XXX" on the top camera shoe, the chinse words "Exciting Hundred 1912 - 2011", and Taiwan's national flower, the plum blossom. Such a limited edition Leica MP camera would surely appeal to collectors."

I rather like the toning of the body and the relief of the gold engraving, but I do not like those chrome fixtures at all.

It’s unusual indeed, but i like it. The contrast of the chrome on the dark grey works well, it highlights the iconic MP handing, especially the top, which is what you’ll be seeing in actual use. At least, that is what i would be doing if i had the cash, tho the people who will end up with one probably won’t .. much ;) .

Alloy of Copper and Zinc = Brass

    …like it’s always been for the MP…

wow it has an exchangeable black and white sensor :)
good to see that the upper upper class leicas are still on the market. looks sweet, except for the gold but that’s part of this edition

“and Taiwan’s national flower, the plum blossom. Such a limited edition Leica MP camera would surely appeal to collectors.”

They say it falls at 5cm per second ;)

Speaking of blossom, this dude doesn’t seem to shoot much else with his leica. He’ll probably have to get one. http://www.flickr.com/photos/moaan/

    I love it !

Two and a half times the cost of an off-the-shelf Leica MP. Seriously?

    • MJr

It’s 2.5 times as awesome. And a magnitude more rare.

Leica has been milking collectors with “Special Editions” for quite a while. Usually, there is nothing special about them, but sometimes (ex. M9 Titanium) did have some innovations. But with film almost gone, this camera will have very limited audience – collectors.

So, if China invades Taiwan and makes it part of China will its value go up or down?

China will never invade Taiwan, don’t be stupid

Back in the 70s, they also said that the US wouldn’t recognize PRC (mainland China), but guess what, not only the US did, it also gave PRC the seat on the UN Security Council that ROC (Taiwan) had at the time.

People thought that US and Japan will never be in bed after Perl Habour and the brutal battles in the Pacific. Now, Japan has the biggest US military bases outside the US.

The world at large thought that by giving Czechoslovakia to Hitler, he wouldn’t start another world war. But he did anyhow.

        Things are… you never know.

Plus, the initial comment was a joke. Don’t take it too seriously.

One good thing I know: it looks worlds better than the PRC 60th anniversary MP.

What does the film advance crank do in a digital camera?
