apparently, leica lives in a world of only white people…..i see NO black people

    • Bob

      Seal owns Leicas.

  • regular

false. Check again starting at 4:30. Black people. End later, north-africa or middle-east guys.

But I fail to understand your point. There is no black people on my flickr stream, does it mean I am racist??

    • AAron

yes, probably, you need to have politicaly correct stream with balanced content.

but, dont worry, go to africa, shoot few poor kids eating rice from your hand, you get to win something (art or anything nice is not rated last 10 years of photography anyway) and gain balanced content

  • Heinz Richter

This seems to a typical negative statement from a Leica hater. Whenever I see anything being published about Leicas, there always seem to be some individuals that have to unload a bunch of negativisms. If they hate the camera so much, why do they bother to even read about it? I think deep down it is the camera equivalent of penis envy.

    • Harold Ellis

we just come for lulz you know, to see what is new in leica world.

    • Nobody Special

HR: That’s a bit of a stretch. There may be ‘Leica haters’ out there (I really don’t care about them either way) and then there are those that see Leica as being over sold as the greatest, and while in the past that may have been partially true – other companies, their technology, and quality has improved.

I see this as Kaufmann trying to gain PR for his company – and he certainly has the right to do that. Nikon and Canon have traditional awards as well, but I don’t see them being paraded about as Leica seems necessary to do. The awards are a nice idea, but I believe it’s important to realize Leica is not the only company doing this. But they seem to hang a lot of PR upon it. Over the last few years, Leica has shown a general lack ‘humbleness’ which they had in the past.

  • leica_love_hate

The world’s sharpest photographic lenses used to create blurry pictures – there certainly are cheaper ways.

    • Harold Ellis

if you cannot focus properly, all what is left is, to call it art.

  • camrageekslayer

Harold I’m sorry if your not happy with your life as is apparent by your constant barrage of negativity on this site. May I suggest you concentrate on your photography to maybe bring some joy in your life.

    • Harold Ellis

not that i am unhappy, just retired and not very busy.
nobody wanted to book old fart like me for nudes or weddings anymore so i am stuck with some commercials and enjoying my savings.

take it as warning to all you young photo dogs. one day you are star, another day you get ugly scar over face on street fight when like an idiot saving horse from beating (i was drunk so don’t judge), then some gray hairs and little belly and your find your self without income.
save furiously, expect injuries or even disability and prepare for old age.

      • regular

        cut the crap.
A few days ago you pretended to own Leica shares when it is basically impossible.

  • http://www.flickr.com/lollus lollus

These are some seriously ugly photos. The motorhomes amid the trees look like cheap publicity and the usual out of focus bw shots of poor looking people are the oldest cliche in photography.
How come Leica cannot find some decent photos to back up their campaign? Even mine are better, even those I took with a compact camera in the Alps among the avalanches.

    • Nobody Special

That’s a good question. Makes one wonder who the ‘judges’ are or what they’re ‘looking’ for in the way of a theme, but there are a bunch of non-photographers or maybe ‘hobby-photographers’ is the proper term, who sit up high at Leica. Maybe it’s them???

    • camrageekslayer

Lollus- You can not like the photos all you want, that is your right but to say yours are better…..I checked…they aren’t. While you take generally nice photos they are just that…nice. There is no true craftsmanship that goes into your photos…not at least like Frank Day’s. I think your just a bit amateur so your not aware the difficulty of setting up shots such as his and exposing them to perfection. Let me tell you he did not just walk by and snap those photos at dusk to get those result, I know from experience it takes painstaking adjustments to get the perfect balance he achieved.

Now like you these are not my favorite but I respect the process of both photographers immensely and I think anyone who was a serious contender in this contest would say the same thing. I know you’ll take my comments as a slight against your work but thats not my intention. Had you not mentioned your work as being better I would not have had to bring it up at all and just debated the photography with you.

I think the one thing that upsets me is people who do not respect the struggle of photography and throw away peoples work flippantly because it’s not what they like. As long as you respect the work then I have no issues with whatever your stance is on any one photographer and his work.

oh and Nobody Special..just a quick note…the Oskar Barnack award is open to every professional photographer no matter what camera system they use. It has no bearing on the outcome. This award is about photography and the photographer..nothing more nothing less. If Leica gets press from it then they are like every other company ever invented. On that note as well…they hardly get any press from the award other then from Leica blogs and websites. Google Oskar Barnack award and you will see the only place it’s really mentioned is on Leica Sites and aggregator sites that rehash what the blogs say. Maybe do a little research before you start your Leica bashing.

      • Nobody Special

I am aware of your last comment to me and who/what equipment is allowed. Please, don’t give me any crap about Leica bashing. I am quite familiar with what Leica does and has done, if you don’t like what I say, good for you – I have no comment on what you say – it’ a free-speech zone internet the last time I checked. Or maybe you would like to edit out all ideas and comments that don’t jive with your’s???

So while you say someone can not like photos all they want, you then go ahead and bash their’s because you don’t like them??? Did you know who Oskar Barnack was before you ‘googled’ him??? Just thought I’d ask, in the meantime, enjoy your ‘opinion slaying’…oh, and ‘photo slaying’.

        • camrageekslayer

Hey Guy I was just countering your comment, or is that not allowed? I didn’t tell you what you can or can’t say, I just told you you were wrong. Theres a difference.

I like the fact you didn’t address the point I made and went straight to angry instead. It’s a free world and you can come here and say whatever bull you want but don’t expect to have carte blanche and not get a response in return. That said…why are you on this site anyways? What satisfaction do you get from being constantly negative?

I specifically laid out my reasoning for responding to that gentleman in the way I did. Critiques are always welcome to me if they are backed with educated knowledge from a place of impartiality. If had said, “I do not necessarily agree with the choice of this years winner because it seems vaguely reminiscent of Gregory Crewdson or Bill Henson.” I would respect the hell out of him and his opinion. Instead he went with the, “that photography is seriously ugly ” “Mine are better” route. I never…I nevvvvvveeeeer say a bad word about anyones photography in a public forum. Trying to find yourself as a photographer and artist is hard enough without being railed all the time by armchair quarterbacks. I only offer praise, encouragement or constructive feedback that has been asked for.

You can get mad and pissy at me all day long but you better come at me with some educated counter argument because I will poke holes in your vague opinions all day long.

Oh and I’ve been aware of who Oskar Barnack is for about…mmm…9 or 10 years. Not the longest of times but I’ve done my homework on him over the years.

          • Nobody Special

            Here geekslayer….

I see that your comment is positive towards another’s work – opinionated – judgemental – so sorry. Oh, ‘But you better come at you with educated counter arguments or I will poke holes in your vague opinions all day long…..’ ‘I just told you you were wrong….’ satisfaction being ‘constantly negative’…..

Anything else, Mr. Positive??? Oh, and remember, people can think differently than you and not be right or wrong, or better or worse than you.

really lollus? you put the ‘lol’ in lollus.

seriously though, to be honest, technically perfect photos are technically boring.

when will you gear heads realize it’s about the photos. actually look at the story it’s telling. look at the way it’s shot there are no accidents there. look how consistent the photos are from each photographer, they all belong together as a whole.

and please stop about pixel peeping to check if your photos of your cat are sharp enough.
