Another Leica book. Erwin Putts Leica Compendium stands head and shoulders above everything else, except maybe Dennis Laney for collectors.

Pasi’s book has been around since 2003 (this is a revised edition) and is about the history of Leica and not about Leica equipment specifically (e.g., Put’s Compendium.) In other words, it’s not supposed to be a compendium and instead is a social history of Leica and Leica photographers. They are two different animals.

Anyway, no reason not to have other authors and other books available. As much as some people might want to believe, Leica is not a theocracy with Erwin Puts as its God.

btw, it’s ‘Puts’ not ‘Putts.’ Don’t misspell God’s name ;-)

The history of Leica is so very well documented that rarely do I see anything new in any book. Joining the Leica Historical Society now allows all previous back issues of the Viewfinder Journal to be downloaded if one wanted to delve deeper and deeper. Online information certainly matches what’s available in books and even now Puts (thanks for the heads-up on spelling) is placing his information in ebook form for consumption.

Not so sure about the God designation, many insights are uniquely his and not found in other publications. It would take much time and effort to discover many of these either by accident or through careful testing/examination. So maybe a demi-god :-)

Just like Porsche, there is a mountain of literature available. But different books come and go and some are interesting despite the fact that the information is already out there. It’s the same with books on world historical periods or events; each author has their own personal perspective despite the plethora of material. It’s not always about new discoveries but also about new interpretations.

Take a look at Pasi’s book. At the very least, it’s well printed (at least the first version, I haven’t seen this revised version.) And it’s published by a very highly respected publisher, W.W. Norton: http://books.wwnorton.com/books/index.aspx

Puts does tend to be a ‘God’ among certain Leica owners. I mentioned it tongue-in-cheek, but there is the reality that some people argue the value of a particular lens based only on what Puts says instead of trying it out themselves to discover if they’d be satisfied or not.

Erwin Puts’s book covers are always cheesy. He should really hire a publishing assistant.

And an editor to fix the spelling and grammatical errors.
