As one door closes… another one opens with an Apsc-c format mini Q behind it?

    • DS

One can only hope they add a new camera to the X range. A mini Q would be nice, but not sure it will happen, for all my wanting.

      • El Aura

Nominally, adding an EVF to the X should make it a mini Q. But I am sure many of you have other specific Q properties that would be needed to label it a mini Q.

        • DS

Faster more reliable AF would be a good start, alongside the EVF. Outside of that the lens is already a cracker on the X113, so I would be happy at this point.

          • El Aura

My real question is why a lot of people explicitly ask for a ‘mini Q’ instead of asking for a certain set of features and performance to be added to the next X model. Or postulated differently, if one were to ask potential Leica customers how likely they were to buy a given camera (with a given feature set, here certainly APS-C, performance, and price) and randomly calling the camera either a Q series model or an X series model, my guess would be that naming it a Q would generate higher purchase likelihoods.

          • DS

I think most would take a an APS-C camera, but based on the Q design – if I am honest.

Better AF, EVF and maybe a nudge on the higher ISO – and based around the X113 lens.

I agree that the Q monicker would sell better. My answer to the your question is that the X design was paying homage to Barnack: a design that died a natural death before most Europeans had refrigeration. Riff on the Ur for a special edition if you must, but don’t expect the market to buy it in numbers… never going to happen.

The Q design is proven, it has all the quality and control layout that the craft market wants. Leica could juggle all the variables for an APSC version, or they could price it ambitiously… Unless they dropped the ball on quality (and why would they?) a mini Q in most potential guises could become a much better gateway drug to digital M than the T series will ever be.

Sony and Fuji, (even Ricoh) have been eating Leica’s lunch in the ‘premium Apsc market’ for years, I hope that changes soon, whatever they call it.

I love X2. I hope they will issue an X3, with up to date electronics.

    • Pantechnicon

If they are committed to the Ur-style form factor, I hope they at least manage to design a less ‘tacked on’ flash mount.

I understand that the Flickr X-E group has 23 members. I expect Dr. K. wrote to each of them personally, to soften the blow.

    • Yes, I do not think the X-E will be coming back.

Leica X1, X2 and X-E are the same thing. It is a line of wonderful and small cameras with retracting lens and superb optics, that I think should be maintained, and updated every few years.

Sure will miss the Leica cameras that I could afford!

I picked up my Leica X 113 from red dot in London second hand, and it is a superb bit of kit. So do not overlook the opportunity to pick them up second hand. Also if you look on Leica Mayfair, they have ex-demo X2’s for £999, I think there is three on their at present.

If you must, but also consider a GR: it is objectively superior, smaller, lighter, has excellent modern controls and crucially: it doesn’t look like it came out of a knallbonbon.

Leica could set a real benchmark in this market segment: mini Q lookalike… a nice 35mm, ‘no built in evf’ to keep cost down, perhaps visoflex compatibility… it could be great.

Potential for a Monochrom edition (!), silly editions without rear screens, 28mm and 50mm versions would not be beyond the realms of possibility. Yes they could be expensive… but the X-E was already twice the price of a GR – I could see people buying into a ‘forward looking’ X family.

A monochrome edition, now that is something I would like. Even a monochrome Q would be nice.
