MS-Optical Perar Super Triplet 28mm F/4 lens

I have covered the MS Super Triplet Perar 3.5/35 Mark II lens on this blog in the past, but I was not aware that there is also a 28mm f/4 version until I came across this listings on japancamerahunter.com:

This lens has been produced after over a year of research by Miyazaki san, and he has learned a lot about how to overcome problems that he faced with previous models of the perar he produced. The lens will be produced in batches, the first batch being of 180 lenses.

Specs:

Triplet Formula lens with high optical stability
Ultra compact and lightweight, only 45grams (55 grams with the hood)
Triplet design with 3 elements in 3 groups for refined sharpness
Premium multicoated lens with a 97% light transmission rate
10 blade aperture diaphragm with smooth selection for a clean bokeh effect:Minimum focal distance of 0.8m
Unique exposed front aperture element

Leica Noctilux DOF scale

The press image of the Leica Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 lens (on the left) that is also uploaded on Leica's website has the incorrect DOF scale. If the lens is set to infinity, the f/16 mark should point at 5 meters and not 10 meters. As you can see from the table bellow, the DOF in this case should be around 5 meters:

Leica Camera USA confirmed that their press image was taken of a prototype or produced from a computer rendering. If you own the Noctilux, there is no need to worry - your lens is not defective.

SLR Magic HyperPrime 50mm f/0.95 lens with Leica M mount announced

Since SLR Magic initially broke the news about their new HyperPrime 50mm f/0.95 lens (M mount), they had to make some design changes to the final version before today's official announcement:

The lens is bigger than the initial prototype and it's a true 50mm focal length. The f/0.95 is also a true aperture and not a theoretical f value
Some changes were done in order to use the lens on RED Epic and ARRI Alexa cameras

RED camera + Leica M lenses

In addition to the Leica Cinema Lenses, cinematographers can soon also use Leica M lenses on a RED camera - Pier 59 with the assistance of Leica Camera have been testing the RED DSMC Leica-M mount in New York this week. Read more on red.com and reduser.net.

The RED DSMC Leica-M mount will be available for both EPIC and Scarlet cameras and it will cost around $800:

Leica Super Elmar M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH lens now shipping in the US

After it was initially delayed for some design changes, the new Super Elmar M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH lens is now finally shipping in the US. The above picture was taken in my local Leica dealer who also had the 28mm Summicron-M f/2 ASPH in stock. My other local dealer currently has the Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH in stock. Every other Leica M lens is pretty much out of stock everywhere, maybe because of the upcoming price increase.

Amazon currently has one 21mm/f/3.4 in stock for a $500 premium.

Leica to increase M lens prices on January 1st, 2012

The Noctilux will be one of the M lenses that will affected by the upcoming price increase

I already mentioned that back in August: Leica Camera will increase their prices on M lenses in the US starting January 1st, 2012. For example, the 50mm f/1.4 Summilux will go up from $3695.00 to $3995.00, the 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux will go from $10495.00 to $10995.00. Prices of cameras and accessories will stay the same. If you need a new M lens, try to get it before the end of the year.

This is not really a surprise since Leica has been raising their prices in the last few years.

LFI magazine: “Leica will soon be presenting novelties in a variety of product categories”

Last week I mentioned about the small excerpt in the latest LFI magazine about upcoming new products from Leica. I just received the English language LFI issue and the text is even more interesting, indicating multiple new products:

"Leica will soon be presenting novelties in a variety of product categories"

The next LFI magazine will be released on December 16th, 2011 - expect new products to be announced in the next 30 days.

The design of Leica Super Elmar M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH lens was slightly changed

The above picture of the new Leica Super Elmar M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH lens ($2,995.00) is from the day it was announced. The current picture of the same lens on Leica's website has a slightly different design (bigger diameter just above the bayonet, ignore the lens hood):

Leica Camera confirmed that some changes were made to that lens and the final version should look like the lens listed on Leica's website.

The Super Elmar M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH lens was initially delayed and probably will start shipping any day now.

LFI magazine promises new products coverage in their next issue

In the German version of the LFI magazine from November 2011 there is an interesting text in the "preview" section on page 74:

"Die Gerüchteverdichtensich, dass es bald NeuheitenvonLeica in unterschiedlichenProduktkategoriengebenwird. Wirberichten in dernächstenAusgabeundwarten, wennmöglich, mitersten Tests auf."

which basically means that LFI will probably publish some tests of a new Leica product in their next issue expected in December 2011.

My guess is that this will be the previously rumored Leica 50mm f/2.0 Summicron-M ASPH lens.

The latest Leica rumors

Those are the latest Leica related rumors I have been receiving:

I already mentioned that the next lens to be announced by Leica will be a new 50mm f/2.0 Summicron-M ASPH. A l-camera-forum member recently discovered a new lens code in the latest M9 firmware that is probably designated for the new 50mm Cron:

"Since I had already coded the lens as code 53, I tried the other frame lines. Guess what, code 53-3 (110101 with frame 50/75) brings up a new lens called 50/2. The current 50 summicron (VI and V) and previous version (III) already have codes 33 and 23. So, is this new 53-3 code for an upcoming, new 50 summicron which has been speculated about?"

Leica M10 will have live view, announcement at Photokina 2012.
Possible Leica lens price increase at the end of 2011. No surprise here since Leica has been raising prices in the last few years. The 50mm Summilux is one of the lenses that will probably get a price increase (current US price: $3695).

Noktor HyperPrime 50mm f/0.95 lens with Leica M mount currently in testing

Noktor created some online buzz last week when they announced on Twitter that they are testing a new full frame HyperPrime lens. The initial expectations were that this lens will come with Nikon/Canon mount but yesterday SLRMagic (the company that currently owns the Noktor brand) confirmed in an email that the new Noktor HyperPrime 50mm f/0.95 lens will be with a Leica M mount. Here is a picture of the actual prototype lens on a M9 body:

Some more details:

obviously the lens can be used on mFT and NEX cameras with an adapter
it will have round aperture opening instead of hexagon shape
slide out hood
metal ring around the lens
the lens will be different from the current Noktor APS-C version

There are rumors floating around that Leica will introduce a new 50mm f/2.0 Summicron-M ASPH lens this Fall. The main upgrade will be the addition of an aspherical element. The current model Leica 50mm f/2.0 Summicron-M lens was introduced in 1994.
