Leica & Magnum: Constantine Manos - Personal Documentary from Leica Camera on Vimeo.

Constantine Manos was born in 1934 in South Carolina to Greek immigrant parents. He went on to attend the University of South Carolina, from which he graduated in 1955. Joining Magnum Photos in 1963, he then became a full Member in 1965. This video, produced in partnership with Magnum, is a personal documentary of Manos' wide-ranging subjects – from desegregation in the American South to life in Greece and his later work throughout America which he shot in color. One thing has remained constant throughout his career, it's been Costa and his Leica rangefinder.

An award-winning street photographer who has been creating memorable images in the great photojournalistic tradition since 1962, Joel Meyerowitz pioneered the use of color in this slice of life genre, and his classic book on Cape Cod, “Cape Light” was instrumental in changing the prevailing dismissive attitudes toward color photography. Within a few days of the 9/11 attacks on The World Trade Center, Meyerowitz began to create an archive of the destruction and recovery at Ground Zero that consists of over 8,000 images of the aftermath of the tragedy. In this latest Leica Portrait video, Joel shares the story of his transition from junior art director to legendary photographer.

The Singled Person from leica camera on Vimeo.

“The Singled Person” is an installation of eight unsynchronized slide projectors displaying photographs by eight international photographers: Michael Ackerman, Morten Andersen, Lorenzo Castore, Thorsten Kirchhoff, Peer Kugler, André Lützen, Hisashi Murayama and Filippo Romano. It offers a subjective lecture on the relationship of the individual and his environment. The traveling installation is currently on view at the 7th Annual Wiesbadener Fototage through September 25th. This slideshow, set to the sound of a projector, shows a sampling of the work of each photographer.

Leica & Magnum: Awakening by Dominic Nahr from leica camera on Vimeo.

In our latest photo essay created in partnership with Magnum Photos, we follow Dominic Nahr into the 20km zone surrounding the nuclear power plant at Fukushima, Japan. Nahr documents the damage that resulted from the plant's breakdown.

We first came across the work of Dominic Nahr when he won the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award in 2009 (http://bit.ly/OBNA09). It came as no surprise that he joined Magnum Photos as a nominee in July 2010. Nahr also spoke at our recent event in Paris with Magnum Photos to discuss "Crises and catastrophes in pictures. Leica Portrait: Paul S. Bartholomew from leica camera

As the latest video in our Leica Portrait series, we had a chance to chat with Paul S. Bartholomew at the High Line Park in New York City. Paul is an architecture photographer based in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In addition to his commercial work photographing modern architecture, Paul uses his Leica M9 as a "sketchbook" to capture structures around the world as part of his personal work along with his new found passion for food photography.

As part of the collaboration between John and Leica, photographers are able to experience the S-System first-hand through a series of activities including interviews and photographic sessions, exhibitions and workshops at the Leica Store Mayfair ‘Studio S’ and other UK studios. German born, New York based photographer wowe (Wolfgang Wesener) has photographed some of the most iconic individuals of the past two decades. He is especially known for his photography of the 1980s punk scene in New York and his photos from that period were recently displayed in an exhibition titled "wowe, Nightclubbing, New York nightlife in the ‘80s" at the Leica Gallery in New York. Here wowe shares some of his wildest stories.

Cartier-Bresson achieved international recognition for his coverage of Gandhi's funeral in India in 1948 and the last (1949) stage of the Chinese Civil War. He covered the last six months of the Kuomintang administration and the first six months of the Maoist People's Republic. He also photographed the last surviving Imperial eunuchs in Beijing, as the city was falling to the communists. From China, he went on to Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), where he documented the gaining of independence from the Dutch. Photograph of Alberto Giacometti by Henri Cartier-Bresson.

In 1952, Cartier-Bresson published his book Images à la sauvette, whose English edition was titled The Decisive Moment. It included a portfolio of 126 of his photos from the East and the West. The book's cover was drawn by Henri Matisse. For his 4,500-word philosophical preface, Cartier-Bresson took his keynote text from the 17th century Cardinal de Retz: "Il n'y a rien dans ce monde qui n'ait un moment decisif" ("There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment"). Cartier-Bresson applied this to his photographic style. He said: "Photographier: c'est dans un même instant et en une fraction de seconde reconnaître un fait et l'organisation rigoureuse de formes perçues visuellement qui expriment et signifient ce fait" ("Photography is simultaneously and instantaneously the recognition of a fact and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that express and signify that fact").

Both titles came from publishers. Tériade, the Greek-born French publisher whom Cartier-Bresson idolized,[peacock term] gave the book its French title, Images à la Sauvette, which can loosely be translated as "images on the run" or "stolen images." Dick Simon of Simon & Schuster came up with the English title The Decisive Moment. Margot Shore, Magnum's Paris bureau chief, did the English translation of Cartier-Bresson's French preface.

"Photography is not like painting," Cartier-Bresson told the Washington Post in 1957. "There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative," he said. "Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever."

Cartier-Bresson held his first exhibition in France at the Pavillon de Marsan in the Louvre in 1955.
