Don’t sell your Leica R lenses yet

I would suggest that you wait till Photokina (September, 2010) before you sell your Leica R lenses.

Leica R lenses prices went down in price on eBay in the past 12 months but I think this will change very soon.

As I already mentioned before, Leica did promise a R solution on a digital body and I suspect that this solution will have something to do with the rumored Leica EVIL camera. Another flashback: Stefan Daniel said in one of the old video interviews that going the DSLR route for Leica “is like jumping in a pool full of sharks” (the S2 is a DSLR but in a different category). The only way to provide an R solution without going the DSLR route is to go mirrorless (EVIL=Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lens). I also think that Leica will produce few new lenses, specifically designed for that new EVIL camera/system.

Steve Huff got a chance to talk to Stefan Daniel and here are the interesting points:

New M lens coming soon (probably the new 35 Lux).

Some new “enhancement” coming out for the M line as well. My guess here is sapphire glass or maybe some kind of a M9 kit (with a lens).

Stefan Daniel denied the Leica mirrorless m4/3 rumor. I am not aware of such a rumor – Leica already said last year that they are not interested in m4/s. The latest rumor I heard however, was about a full frame EVIL camera which could be the R solution which Leica promised (the exact words were “there will be no R10 from Leica, but there will be a good solution that allows us to use our R-lenses on a digital body”“). We shall see what will Photokina bring us.

Some Leica X1 news should be coming from Photokina – maybe they will announce the X1 black version already seen on a tv show.

Oh, I missed this one: a classic lens can be introduced as a special edition in the near future.

Leica to auction old R system production tools

The rumor is that Leica is going to auction some old production tools, mainly for the R system, that are no longer in use. The auction is expected to be handled by Westlicht (they recently auctioned some Leica M9 prototypes). You can also see this movie about a Leica auction at Westlich from earlier this year.

This just hit the wires (source):

“From Stefan Daniel: there will be no R10 from Leica, but there will be a good solution that allows us to use our R-lenses on a digital body.”

I think the full frame Leica M9 rumor from yesterday just became more credible – Leica M9 on 09.09.2009. Maybe this date will be only for the M9 announcement and availability will be in late 2010 (just like the Leica S2). It’s all speculations for now, but everything started to make more sense now. Maybe M9 will not be full frame after all…

Leica S technology should “filter into high-end consumer products”

I got my hands on an email from a majorÂ¬â€ photographic products reseller – most of the information is not new and just confirms that we should expect some fun Leica time ahead of us.Â¬â€

“Just to clarify Leica’s press release regarding the R system……

It is correct that the production of R system bodies and lenses have ceased production.

As far as a digital forward path…..
Leica currently have the M and S systems which are digital.
I am told by Lieca Camera AG that the existing “R” lenses will work with the new camera system.
Not sure of the details, as soon as I know more, I will let you all know.

Leica have invested a huge amount of development time and money into the “S’,
to produce another world’s first for the Professional imaging market.
Leica Camera AG learnt a great deal along the “S” journey,Â¬â€
and they have promised me that we will quickly see this technology filter into high-end consumer products.”

Email from a reader in France:

Today, I had to go to xxx a well known store dedicated to Leica in Paris (France) to get a part replaced on my M6. The owner of the store was talking with a friend about the next Leica camera…

He said that Leica will be announcing at Photokina a new camera , that no other brands have, a digital medium format camera dedicated to reporter (like the mamiya 7, but digital).

The only technical specification that he said was : 40mpixel, medium format and Leica will produce a range of 10 autofocus lenses for that camera. He also said that it would be available 6 months to 1 year after photokina.

He talked about the R10 too, but he said nothing interesting on it. Just “Yes, the R10 will come”.

Two new Leica models between the D-Lux 4 and M8?

This came out of a meeting between l-camera-forum members and Leica management (Leica’s CEO Andreas Kaufmann, Stefan Daniel, product manager M system and Maike Harberts and Stephan Schulz, responsible for the development of the new Leica S2):

“Mr. Kaufmann repeated his clear commitment to a digital R10 – with autofocus lenses.”

“After questions about cheaper cameras Mr. Kaufmann made an interesting statement: Between the new digital compact cameras C-LUX 3 and D-LUX 4 on the one side and the M8 is a big price gap – that could be big enough for two cameras. No more details were told…”

Update (09.23.08): Photographypress UK and Amateurphotographer UK confirms launch plans for Leica R10 (I hope they did not use us as a source).

The code name AFRika was for the S2 camera that was announced today. This is what I found on the live blog from the S2 event:

Good new for Leica R photographers!

A LEICA R10 is in development!

Mr. Kaufmann doesn’t want to tell a detailed time schedule – but it will come!

R10 should be:

- full frame

- with autofocus

- released in 2009

- new set of autofocus lenses

- adapter for old lenses

According to this siteÂ¬Â¨â€šÃ„â€ (and the CEO of Leica Dr. Kaufmann) Leica will release a new camera system with the code name AFRika (in German):

“Ein System, das den Erfordernissen der professionellen Digitalfotografie im 21. Jahrhundert gerecht wird. Handlich wie eine DSLR. Hochauflâ€šÃ Ã¶â€šÃ Ã‡send wie eine Studiokamera. Mit einem Prozessor, wie es noch keinen gab. Mit Objektiven, wie es noch keine gibt.”
