This just hit the wires (source):

"From Stefan Daniel: there will be no R10 from Leica, but there will be a good solution that allows us to use our R-lenses on a digital body."

I think the full frame Leica M9 rumor from yesterday just became more credible - Leica M9 on 09.09.2009. Maybe this date will be only for the M9 announcement and availability will be in late 2010 (just like the Leica S2). It's all speculations for now, but everything started to make more sense now. Maybe M9 will not be full frame after all...

Part of an email I received yesterday (I took the first portion of the email away to protect the identity of the reader):

"... who has close ties with Leica says the R10 digital is confirmed for Summer 2010. It will be with AF, and be accompanied by new lenses of course because the R lenses were discontinued."

The above statement matches the previous report: R10 - announced in Jan 2010, available Summer 2010.

Leica R10 is coming in January 2010

Leica R9 is now being shut down as well as the manufacture of manually focused lenses. This happens awaiting the digital R10 which will get autofocus.

For some years there was a digital back for Leica R8 and R9 called Digital Modul-R. Leica regards that upgrading the (DMR) while waiting for the fully digital camera is not profitable.

Update (09.23.08): Photographypress UK and Amateurphotographer UK confirms launch plans for Leica R10 (I hope they did not use us as a source).

The code name AFRika was for the S2 camera that was announced today. This is what I found on the live blog from the S2 event:

Good new for Leica R photographers!

A LEICA R10 is in development!

Mr. Kaufmann doesn't want to tell a detailed time schedule - but it will come!

R10 should be:

- full frame

- with autofocus

- released in 2009

- new set of autofocus lenses

- adapter for old lenses

According to this site (and the CEO of Leica Dr. Kaufmann) Leica will release a new camera system with the code name AFRika:

Making an RF camera that is affordable, ($1000 - $2,000) and lenses that are more affordable, which they are doing currently, should get more people using the RF format. This camera will be announced and shown at Photokina, along with the new R10, and the Dlux-4, in a kit form (including a telephoto add-on lens). It makes good marketing sense. Also, they are going to drop the 4/3 system, leaving Olympus to their Zuiko lenses, and continue their association with Panasonic. My source is solid, I'm not a troll. I guess we'll know next month, for sure."

The German Foto Magazine distributed some Leica rumors in their latest edition (page 30):

Concerning the German photojournal FotoMagazin (FoMag) 8/2008 , which appeared today, there will be following Leica-news at Photochina:

- Leica will introduce a FF R10 and a new corresponding AF -lens line as prototype. Production will start late 2009.
- There will not be a new Leica FT model - but Leica will continue together with Panasonic the FTs line ( - think whatever you believe imho it is an Ausstieg¹ )
- FoMag is waiting for a new "Leica-Knaller" (Big Leica-Bang) which will be introduced at Sept. 15th in a press conference. FoMag will publish the news on a separate FoMag internet page.
