Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2012 competition now open

Entries now being accepted for annual Leica photography competition

16 January 2012: Leica Camera AG has announced that entries are now being accepted for the 2012 Oskar Barnack Award. Photographers interested in submitting entries can apply from now until 1 March 2012. Full details, entry criteria and terms and conditions can be found at www.leica-oskar-barnack-award.com.

The Leica Oskar Barnack Award will be presented for the 33rd time this year. The winner will receive a Leica M9-P camera with lens worth approximately €10,000 in addition to a cash prize of €5,000. A further prize will be awarded – the ‘Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award’ – for (prospective) professional photographers aged 25 and under. The winner of this section will also be awarded a Leica M9-P complete with lens.

The members of this year’s international jury include: Bruce Gilden, Magnum photographer, Stephan Erfurt, Director of C/O Berlin, Valérie Fougeirol, Creative Director of the Magnum Gallery in Paris, Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Artistic Director of the Leica Galerie in Salzburg and Brigitte Schaller, Art Director of Leica Fotografie International magazine.

The awards will be presented in the course of the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie photography festival to be held in Arles, France from 2 to 8 July 2012.

In our latest photo essay made in collaboration with Magnum Photos, we follow Bruce Gilden to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Bruce Gilden first traveled to Haiti in 1984 and made 19 trips over the course of 10 years, culminating in his book titled, quite simply, “Haiti”. In February and March 2010, he went back to Port-au-Prince to witness firsthand what had happened in the wake of the earthquake. What he found was a city destroyed and people who are poor of everything but grace, pride and a distinctive soul. During his most recent trip this past September, he went back to document a refugee camp that has sprung up across the street from the half-destroyed presidential palace in downtown Port-au-Prince. In this video, Gilden shares his audio, video and photo captures of this neighborhood of decorated huts built out of scavenged corrugated tin and cardboard, recreated with all the elements of Haitian life as if the people knew right away that this temporary settlement would be their long term home. Kai Wiesinger, a German actor, inherited his love of photography from his father who worked as a reporter. During the filming of his latest movie "Wunderkinder", which premiered on October 6th of this year, Kai worked on both sides of the camera, acting in the film and documenting the production from behind the lens of his Leica M8.

What is the value of this vintage Leica I camera?

A reader of this blog is selling this vintage Leica camera and would like to know what will be its retail value today. The serial number 33068 indicates that this is a Leica I model that was produced in 1930. Here is a quote from Wikipedia:

"Leica I — was first introduced to the market at the 1925 spring fair in Leipzig, based on the Ur-Leica prototype developed by Barnack in 1913 and the Prototyp 1 developed in 1923. Followed by LeicaLuxur and LeicaCompur (a total of 60,586 of the Leica I, Luxur and Compur models were made). Interchangeable lenses for these were introduced in 1930."

A giant Leica M3 camera appears on a building in Sarasota

Anat Ronen created this 20 x 15 feet drawing of a Leica M3 camera in Sarasota, Florida:

This was created during the Sarasota Chalk Festival – 1-7 November, 2011. For the first time, it had a “going vertical” addition – meaning murals and graffiti art. The wall belongs to a photography studio, and the owner took the reference picture that was the basis for the mural. I came up with the idea, and him being a photographer, took a picture of his own favorite camera. I work with brushes – the main mural measures 15’x20’ and was completed in 3 full days.

Leica has a surprise for next year

At a recent Leica Experience Day in Germany, Dr. Kaufmann made a comment suggesting another surprise for next year in addition to the upcoming Leica M10 and new mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras:

"He promised more than one surprise for next year – and he told us that they haven’t been discussed or discovered by Leica Rumors or the Leica Forum until now."

I know one thing for sure - this surprise is not going to be a price reduction of Leica products.

Yes, there was a underwater housing for the Leica Digilux 2 camera

While I was wondering around on eBay, I came across this underwater housing for Leica Digilux 2 camera. The manufacturer is Hugyfot and they have this posted on their website from 2004:

Hugyfot Belgium is contacted by Leica for the development of the Leica Digilux-2 housing. It appears to be dead on target and the pretty design of this housing enjoys a lot of admiration and attention. More and more digital cameras appear at the ‘underwater’ scene and Hugyfot decides to only focus on the development and production of housings for digital SLR-cameras.

This Leica M4 underwater housing recently sold at Westlicht for 150.000 Euros. At one point there was even a underwater housing for Leica M8.

Photographers wishing to take part may submit their projects online between January 16 and March 1, 2012. The terms and conditions of entry can be downloaded from www.leica-oskar-barnack-award.com shortly before the start of the competition.

The winner of the 2012 Leica Oskar Barnack Award will receive a Leica M9-P camera with lens worth approximately €10,000 (approximately US $14,000) in addition to a cash prize of €5,000. A second honor will be awarded in the category ‘Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award’, for (aspiring) professional photographers aged 25 and under. The winner of the first prize in this section will also be awarded a Leica M9-P complete with lens.

Competition entry conditions: An international jury awards the Leica Oskar Barnack Award/Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award to photographers whose unerring powers of observation capture and express the relationship between man and their environment in graphic form in a portfolio of up to 12 images. Submissions must be a self-contained series of images in which the photographer perceives and documents the interaction between man and his environment with acute vision and contemporary visual style – creative, unobtrusive and groundbreaking.

With this competition, Leica Camera AG remembers Oskar Barnack (1879–1936), the inventor of the Leica. From 1914 on, he increasingly used the prototype camera he developed, the so-called Ur-Leica, for photography. The history of photojournalism is closely tied to his invention, as, beginning in 1925, the compact and easily carried Leica cameras were instrumental in enabling entirely new and expressive forms of photography.

The upcoming Fuji mirrorless camera resembles Leica M9

First Leica boutique to open in Sydney

A new Leica store will be opened in Sydney on November 24:

"Foto Riesel has adopted a Great Gatsby twenties theme for the invitation-only launch, which takes place at the company’s Kent Street premises on November 24, 85 years after the first Leica camera went into production.
Leica ambassadors John Laham and Craig Coverdale have been invited to talk about their photographic achievements."

In the past few months Leica Cameras has opened a series of new stores in various locations.
