One of the reasons for this step is because the new Leica M digital rangefinder will make it easier to use telephoto lenses (live view, focus confirmation). If you have purchased the Leica APO-TELYT-M 135 mm f/3.4 lens after September 1st 2012, you can get the 6-bit coding for free.
