LEICA AND RANKIN HOST PRIVATE VIEWING OF ‘S MAGAZINE: THE RANKIN ISSUE’
Allendale, NJ (January 14, 2013) – Leica Camera, the legendary German camera manufacturer, along with renowned British fashion photographer, Rankin, will celebrate the release of the third installment of S Magazine: The Rankin Issue with an exclusive invite-only event on January 22nd at the Rankin Gallery on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. The private event will feature photographs taken from the latest issue of S Magazine.
Using only the Leica S camera, Rankin, whose career has spanned over two decades, collaborated with nine individual hair stylists, to create a series of striking images and a collection of diverse fashion stories which are communicated across the latest 200-page edition of S Magazine. The exhibition will be on display through March 2013.
“I was using and loved the S-System camera. It’s a brilliant example of a high-res camera – in a medium format resolution file and with the 35mm experience of the body,” says Rankin. “I love the autofocus on it, the lenses are out of this world and I love the weight of it. It gives a great image quality.”
“I’d always thought it would be interesting to do a hair book where you take hairdressers and you give them the opportunity to do anything they want,” says Rankin. “It was a chance to collaborate with the people I really admire, but also people I knew had hidden talents that maybe hadn’t come out yet,” he continued.
Nine spreads in the issue were shot by Rankin using the complete Leica S-System. Within each collection of images, Rankin collaborated with a top hair stylist who led the art direction with diverse subject matter ranging from “The Glow” to “Antithesis.” Featured hair stylists include Alain Pichon, Wendy Iles, Kenna, Raphaël Salley, Tina Outen, Nick Irwin, Kevin Ford, Charlie Le Mindu and Johnnie Sapong.
S Magazine is unique in that it allows professional photographers to share inspiration and contemporary photographic ideas. The publication includes editorial portfolios and current advertising campaigns by prominent international photographers as well as information on the latest trends in commercial photography. S Magazine: The Rankin Issue is now available at select Leica retailers.
The new Leica S-System camera was recently unveiled at photokina in Germany and offers users increased image quality and sensor sensitivity, predictive autofocus, in addition to higher speed and enhanced handling. As well as the camera body, three new lenses have been added to the S-System portfolio, significantly expanding the capabilities of the system.
