Leica Store San Francisco Presents: Ralph Gibson Masterclass
October 31 – November 2, 2016
Leica Store San Francisco is proud to announce an intensive 3-Day Masterclass with the highly acclaimed and legendary photographer Ralph Gibson. It has been over thirty years since Ralph has taught a workshop in San Francisco, having attended San Francisco Art Institute then moving on to assist Dorothea Lange and than Robert Frank on his films.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work alongside one of the greatest visual artists and photographers in the history of the medium.
The class will be based out of the Leica Store San Francisco location and over the course of three days, will also involve photographing nude models at various offsite locations. Additionally, throughout the class, Gibson will take time to meet with each participant for an open portfolio review and critique with the group. Of which the primary goal is to help the individual “think” and “see” differently and how best to reach the next level in their photography.
Statement by Ralph Gibson:
László Moholy-Nagy stated in “Ein Album Photographischer Metaphern”:”The illiterate of the future will be the person ignorant of the use of the camera as well as the pen.” These words were written long ago and little did he anticipate the truth they were to deliver. However with today’s mass ability to create imagery comes a subsequent anonymity which results in all the imagery looking basically the same… Unified and distilled into the broadest common denominator. All great photographers establish their individual visual signature to their work and their images are instantly recognizable.
How is this visual individuality imparted to the image and wherein lie the sources of this personal uniqueness? The answer lies in a protracted study of the photographers work to date and his approach to subsequent images. It is a process that can be identified and structured.
This 3-Day class will examine these issues. Thinking visually is as important as seeing visually.
Experience Level: Open to all photographers, but participants should have working knowledge of their camera systems.
Cost: $1,500
