Lars Netopil Classic Cameras has published a new book “Wilhelm Albert – Birthdays of the Leitz Photo Constructions from 1927” that is currently available for sale at Jo Geier and other fine camera and book stores (check also Amazon). Additional information:
Oskar Barnack, the inventor of the legendary Leica camera, died far too early in 1936, at the age of only 56. Wilhelm Albert had been Barnacks’s closest colleague since 1927 and is considered to have continued his intellectual legacy in the photo construction department of the then Leitz company.
His diary of the Leitz photo constructions from 1927, in which he documented a large part of his work up to 1963, has come down to us from Wilhelm Albert’s estate. The present facsimile edition allows fascinating insights into Albert’s constructions.
The prototypes shown relate to later series products in the same way as those that got stuck in the test stage, as well as products that were manufactured as unique items or in small series, especially for certain customers.
In 1990 LEICA HISTORICA released a book with the same title based on the working material of Wilhelm Albert, limited to only 333 copies.
31 years later Lars Netopil was able to renew this rare book, including the original pictures and photo negatives of Wilhelm Albert in a high-quality-print photo book with beautiful illustrations. The first edition in English and German language is limited to 300 copies
