The Exposure Donut concept (EXPODO)

A reader sent me his idea and mock-up images specific to Leica cameras for an Exposure Donut concept (EXPODO):

Fundamentally, exposure control is simply a trade-off between image brightness and three types of blur. Light and the three essential camera controls all contribute to the brightness of your image. The exposure donut visualises all four of these as colored arcs. Their combined length represents the brightness of your image. When they add up to a complete circle (the donut) your image has a ‘normal’ brightness, or what most cameras call EV 0.

Adding more of any of the three camera variables has the side effect of making your image blurry.

– A bigger aperture (smaller f/number) adds background blur (bokeh):

– More time (slower shutter speed) adds more motion blur:

– More sensitivity (higher ISO) adds grain blur (noise):

The donut can be controlled as a touch-screen interface. Today EXPODO only exists as a prototype on a number of hacked sony cameras. If you have access to an iPhone, this Beta/test flight app is not a camera app but simulates the experience of using EXPODO to control a full-frame mirrorless camera. https://expodo.photo/demo/ . It’s free to download.

The donut can also be controlled with physical dials and displayed through a viewfinder:
