Leica M11 “100 Years of Leica – Dubai UAE” limited edition camera unboxing and quick review by aljawad:
I am delighted to share my experience with the special edition Leica M11 “100 Years of Leica (Dubai UAE)” camera, unveiled days ago during a lavish event in Dubai. This release marks a significant milestone in Leica’s celebration of its centennial as a pioneer in camera innovation. Dubai was chosen to kick off this year’s global celebration activities, which will extend in the coming months to include Tokyo, Shanghai, Milan, Wetzlar, and New York. Each city will feature a dedicated special edition release, further commemorating Leica’s remarkable legacy.
I was fortunate to obtain Camera No. 35 (of 100). This number holds particular significance for me, as it references the 35mm film format, which Leica pioneered a century ago, as well as the 35mm focal length—a personal favorite in my photography.
The packaging of this special edition stands out from the standard M11’s silver box and grey outer packaging. Instead, it prominently displays the release number. The accessories are thoughtfully presented in a minimalist style, avoiding excessive compartments or magnetized locks, perfectly aligning with the understated elegance of this release.
Functionally, the camera remains faithful to the original M11, retaining all its features and capabilities. However, it is the aesthetics of this special edition that truly set it apart. Leica has embraced a restrained yet sophisticated design approach, forgoing overly exotic materials or excessive embellishments. The subtle luster of the black paint finish on the top plate, complemented by contrasting chrome controls and finely textured leather, results in an understated yet strikingly elegant appearance. This timeless design pays a fitting tribute to Leica’s centennial legacy, harmoniously blending nostalgic charm with modern craftsmanship.
A minor issue I noticed is the inclusion of a black hot-shoe cover, prominently engraved with “100,” instead of a chrome one, which I believe would better complement the camera’s cohesive aesthetic and match its chrome controls. While this is a subtle detail, fortunately, a chrome version will be available as a separate accessory.
Overall, I am genuinely impressed and thoroughly delighted with this special release. It serves as a fitting tribute to Leica’s extraordinary legacy in photography and its unwavering dedication to designing cameras that are both elegant and practical. This edition masterfully upholds the exquisite design principles that have defined Leica cameras for over a century, blending timeless craftsmanship with modern innovation.
The “100 Years of Leica” edition not only celebrates the company’s pivotal role in revolutionizing photography with the introduction of the 35mm film format but also honors the enduring significance of the iconic M camera system. Even 70 years after its inception, the M system remains a hallmark of precision, reliability, and aesthetic excellence in the photographic world. I have no doubt that Leica will continue to build on this rich heritage, ensuring the M system remains at the forefront of photographic innovation for generations to come.
