Leica S3 interview: overheating is one of the reasons Leica went with a DSLR design, they are open to the idea of a mirrorless medium format camera


Recap of the Reddotforum’s interview with Toni Felsner from Leica on the new Leica S3 medium format camera:

  • It has been 10 years since the Leica S System was introduced
  • The new 64MP sensor is a completely new design, made specifically for the Leica S3 and and it will not be available to other companies
  • No low pass filter in the S3 (only an IR filter glass over the sensor)
  • Better dynamic range than the Leica S 007
  • The images at ISO 6400 looks very clean, almost no noise whatsoever
  • Overheating is one of the reasons Leica decided to stick with a DSLR design
  • Leica is open to the idea of a mirrorless medium format camera
  • The S3 will start shipping in spring of 2019
