Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2.0 ASPH lens delayed

Today Leica Camera sent an update for the delay of the APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2.0 ASPH lens ($7,195.00). No specific delivery date was given:

"As you are aware, Leica is dedicated to producing products that exhibit mastery in optics and mechanics, high- quality design and outstanding craftsmanship. Our engineers and designers constantly strive to meet the challenges set by those with the highest expectations and only after extensive testing and quality control exercises is a product deemed worthy to enter the marketplace.

Due to the extraordinary technical requirements of the new APO- Summicron- M 50mm/f2 ASPH lens, the manufacturing processes are complex and sensitive. We regret to inform you that the first shipment of the APOSummicron-M 50mm/f2.0 ASPH has been delayed due to technical reasons as we actively work to determine a stable production process for this new lens."

You know its going to be a good 50mm when they need to find a “stable production process”. Take your time Leica

LOL. Requires new more stable process my a$$.
Read, not enough orders to justify charging like they meant to.

Next news, price change, due to a new “in house breakthrough” that gives same level of quality more efficiently…
    Like Sigma… 😛

Anyhow, I thought this lens was already out, just that no body was buying.

They’ve been through this before with the R 28-90 f2.8 asph, only that was produced for a very short time as I recall, do to ‘production difficulties’ as it was very pricey to produce. I had to send back my R 21-35 immediately after unboxing for bad helicals, the second one had brass shavings inside the rear element, the third one was passable, but it focused a little rough.
Contrary to Leicas less than humble ‘aren’t we perfect’ attitude, they aren’t. So, Leica has all kind of reasons in their past production history, hard to figure, you know, because they are so perfect. Seriously, they need to figure things out with all of their fancy new stores opening up.

As usual with Leica, no surprises here. Now let’s wait for the delay announcement regarding the new M and most of the other products they announced at Photokina – and of course, the CS lenses are not shipping yet, are they?. Once these products officially start shipping they will be out of stock everywhere, like most of the M lenses. I like Leica products (use the S2 with 3 lenses and have used the M9 also) but the company does get on my nerves…

  • Anyone with a know-how in lens design can come up with some out-of-this world lens design that’s super complex and super expensive to make. It doesn’t take Leica to do it. The difficult thing (from the manufacturer’s perspective) is coming up with a good-enough design that can be produced in large enough quantities… that’s what the big-$ companies like Canon, Nikon, Sigma, etc. are doing.
