Leica M10 firmware update released

Leica camera just released firmware updated version for the M10 camera. Here is the changelog:

The color-coding of the SD-Card and battery status bars has been changed.
The color of the status bar now changes from green to yellow to red as the battery is depleted or the SD card is filled.

Two favorites pages allowed
It is now possible to choose up to 15 menu items for the favorites menu. If more than 7 are chosen, a
second favorites page will be automatically added.

Quick access to the main menu and page-by-page scrolling using the menu button
Pushing the menu button while in the last page of favorites will open the first page of the main menu. It is possible to scroll through the main menu page-by-page using the menu button.

Auto Review Screen Target selectable
In the menu item EVF/display control it is now possible to choose from “Auto”, “EVF” or “Display” to determine which screen the Auto Review function uses by default.

“M-ISO" can be accessed directly from the favorites menu
In “Edit Favorites” it is possible to enable a shortcut to “M-ISO” for the favorites menu

Shorter blackout time after capturing in Live view
The time when the Live View stream is interrupted after a picture is taken is significantly shorter now. This is most noticeable when Auto Review is turned off.

Additional bug fixes and minor improvements also included.

Press release:

Firmware update now available for the Leica M10

Leica Camera has released a firmware update for the Leica M10, downloadable from the Leica web site from today.

Firmware version adds numerous improvements to the camera’s handling. These include optimised colour-coding of the status bar for SD memory cards and battery level, which now change from green to yellow to red as the battery charge level reduces or the card becomes full.

The ‘Favourites Menu’ has also been revised: up to 15 menu entries can now be created and a second Favourites page opens after adding more than seven entries. Furthermore, with this update, M10 owners have even faster access to the main menu – it can now be opened by pressing the Menu button in the Favourites Menu. The same button can also be used for page-by-page scrolling.

An additional new feature enables the selection of the target display for automatic review on the monitor screen. The menu entry now offers the alternatives ‘Auto’, ‘EVF’ or ‘Display’ as target options, while ‘Edit Favourites’ allows the activation of direct access to ‘M-ISO’ as a Favourites Menu item. The firmware update also brings a further significant reduction in the lag (dark screen) between exposure and display when taking pictures in Live View mode.

  • The fix to LV is significant. Now the blackout is actually tolerable. There are still several bugs…but the WiFi Bug seems to be resolved.

Pretty cool considering I did not think the clack out was long compared to teh M240

      • If you turn off auto review (I set a profile for EVF)…its actually pretty pleasant to use the EVF. The previous blackout was annoying to me and I avoided the EVF unless it was the only option. Now I may actually use it more.

One wonders if there is an official record for the number of software updates in the launch month…

I sure hope this means Leica will now be shipping out the M10 to dealers in greater quantities.

    • I don’t think the shipment capacity is impacted by the firmware update.

      • nemo295

Not directly, of course. But it’s conceivable that Leica was waiting for another firmware patch to be finalized before the M10 found its way into a lot more customers’ hands. Better to squash the bugs now and avoid dealing with a lot of annoyed users later.

Peter perhaps in the firmware post you could put a list of the known bugs/issues with the M10? I’m just curious what the overall issues are… (I’ve read various threads on the forums but a short list would be great!)

    • There are only a few bugs. Overall the camera is the best digital M Leica has shipped:
1- Camera displays incorrect exposure icon on playback screen
2- some SD cards are not compatible
3- Auto Review mode “HOLD” does not function as on previous M’s. The image remains until the shutter is tapped again. On previous M’s the image remained as long as the shutter release was held down.

      • I just tested with the latest firmware – 1 is still an issue and I still cannot rename a user profile. Maybe next time 🙂 Otherwise I am very happy with what Leica did with the M10.

        • weird…I don’t have any issues. Have you tried rebuilding a profile and then try renaming it? I assume you are using the “Rename” option

          • I tried both. I will test it again. I just cannot see what I am typing on the screen. Strange if others are not seeing this issue.

          • well some people are also reporting the date/time is off…but others aren’t. All my images have the correct date/time. Maybe its related…is your date/time accurate?

          • I just tested it and my time stamp is correct.

    • there are a few bugs reports in this post and the comments under the post:

Leica M has surprisingly primitive software compared to other camera manufacturers, even considering M’s menu simplicity and just a few options camera can actually do. That it takes them “several software updates” to fix a minor bug, is preposterous. Considering how simple it is, that thing should work as it is supposed to work, first day out.

What about “missing spirit level/virtual horizon”?

    • Not sure about that – one of the tips about adding this later came from Leica support, the other from a Leica manager. Unless both of them were wrong, we should probably see this in the future.

      • David V. Kutaliya

        Peter, thank you very much!

      • nemo295

If the M10 can be updated to display a spirit level it must mean it contains the internal components to make it possible. But if that is the case I have to wonder why they didn’t enable it from the beginning. It’s an important feature.

        • This is the message the customer care team at Leica Camera in Wetzlar send to a reader:
“The missing horizon/level tool is in process and is integrated with one of the next firmware updates.”
          Here his the second report:

Well a couple of weeks ago, I asked the question directly to **** (from Leica). He was clear about the “virtual horizon”… Today as everybody noticed it… Its’ gone. But he said also that if there was a huge demand about bring it back… Well Leica will reintroduce it (in a next coming firmware!). But it doesn’t mean that it will be back in the next firmware 😉
Those are the rumors/info from two different sources that I based my post on.

          • David V. Kutaliya

            Very interesting:) Thanks again!

What about a firmware issue to fix the shutter lag. It’s 2017, this is a $10k camera and it has shutter lag. Oh and it’s louder than a DSLR.

    • Andrew Gemmell

Really? As in it has more than all past digital Ms or the same?

  • Clint Batac

Does anyone have the direct link to the firmware download page? I’ve looked everywhere on Leica’s site but the only thing on the download page is the firmware install instruction (smh) – Thanks in advance.
