Zeiss has no imminent plans for more updated ZM lenses (for Leica M mount)

At a recent photo gear show, a reader asked a Zeiss representative if the company is planning to release any updates to the existing ZM range of lenses or any new ZM lenses for Leica M mount and the answer was: no imminent updates or roadmap updates whatsoever, with the Distagon T* 35mm f/1.4 still being the latest ZM update. Another comment was made that said that many users are no longer interested in using the optional Zeiss viewfinders and it's quite possible that it will be discontinued in the future.

I own a Zeiss Planar 50mm f/2 ZM. It’s an outstanding lens. I doubt if Zeiss could improve on it in any meaningful way.

Agreed (though I just sold mine). That said, their wider range could do with an update. Their 85’s are also no longer available AFAIK.

This is disappointing but completely understandable. M mount glass is a small market. Why focus on M mount lenses that are always a compromise on anything other then a Leica when they can produce lenses for Sony that will sell in far greater numbers.

It’s too bad, for Leica users the Zeiss lenses were always a nice option. I own both the 35mm 1.4 and the 50mm Sonnar and both are great lenses.

Because like Voigtlander they can make them for both. No real reason they couldn’t make the Loxia 21mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm in M mount. I would literally buy all of them. Will not buy any of them in E-Mount though (and I am more than happy to use Sony gear if Zeiss made these in M mount).

    Waiting for the Zeiss-SL lenses…

  • So not even cosmetic update to their new rubber-smooth industrial design?

The ZM line is already more impressive than 95 percent of the rangefinder systems ever existed.

Let’s accept that the renaissance was over quite a while ago…not like we need a tombstone to seal that.
