New: Leica M Monochrom Typ 246 Oslo Edition

There is a new Leica M Monochrom Typ 246 Oslo Edition camera that comes with a black version of the Leica Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 lens (Google translation):

"The special edition is available in only 10 copies worldwide and is only available from Leica Store Oslo. The text 'OSLO' is engraved on the back of the camera housing and on the front of the lens. Each body and lens are numbered, eg: OSLO # 01.

The ultra-compact wide-angle lens Summaron-M 28mm f5.6 ASPH with metal solder is included. This is a modern edition of a Leica classic from 1955. For this special edition, the lens comes with a unique black surface - as it is first in the world. Included in the elaborate gift box is also a black camera frame in leather, battery, charger and authentication certificates."

Cool edition, super stealth. Ive been wanting that 28mm summaron lens, although in silver, can’t find one yet.

I have no interest in a f/5.6 lens, personally. But what I found really odd about the lens when I tried it out briefly was that the focusing tab was in a really awkward place when I focused to my normal portrait shooting distance. On my 35mm Summicron, the tab is around 5pm or 7pm. On this lens its at like 2pm or 11pm.

I actually prefer to shoot a lot of street and landscape photos at f/5.6 or higher especially on my 35mm summicron. It’s never really bothered me. I primarily want it because of its pancake size & 28mm perspective but I’ll have to keep in mind the focusing tab placement. I tend to have a different mindset with each lens so not sure it would bother me unless i was switching back and forth constantly.

The tab may not be in the “wrong” place for you depending on your shooting distance. I tend to shoot at 3-5 feet from my subject and the tab is in a bad spot for me a those distances.

A 35 Cron is my standard lens, I used the 5.6 Summaron quite differently, mostly at infinity or based on desired focal plane distance and depth of field. I think I’ve taken about 2 pictures in total focusing through the viewfinder.

Does anyone know when Leica plans to stock the new 28mm summaron f/5.6 in silver? I can’t find any for sale yet at BH or Leica stores.

Wibergs Foto i Stockholm has the Summaron (silver) in stock. http://wibergsfoto.se

Thanks but I was looking for a place in north america right now since that’s where i am currently. They must not be making very many.

I went to my dealer in London to get a strap for my son and walked out with a 28 Summaron and a strap. He’d bought one in for stock, it had arrived the day before. He’d listed it as in stock on his website, had a buyer coming in from Hong Kong about to get it the next day, but who did not put down a deposit. So I got it. Apparently they are made to order, that what Leica London say, and will be limited to 2,000. Been using on my M10 and love it.

I have not heard they were made to order and limited to 2,000. They offer the lens for pre-order some places but who knows what that means. If it was a limited release it would likely mean they would be hard to get at all.

Leica Mayfair is listing one in stock, so they may not all be to order. There is a review in LFI late 2016 – aimed both at collectors and users. I don’t think they will be stopping anytime soon.

Yes, thanks for the suggestion. I did check with a Leica store here and it is a pre-order, get on a list kind of thing. Probably to avoid making too many since it is more of a speciality lens and not in high demand. Hope you enjoy yours!

  • would love to have the black one, so damn hot!
but i don´t think that they will go for a stock production with that, right??
sounds that it´s reservated for this edition?!?!
i love those pancakes but the silver edition don´t fit my personal “all black” taste – the 28mm summilux is insane sharp (and expensive) but has the same weight as myself…

    DAMN editions…
