Leica rumored to announce a new APO-Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 lens

Leica Camera is rumored to announce soon a new SL lens: Leica APO-Summicron-SL 50mm f/2. This will be the fourth Summicron lens for the SL system (the other three f/2 lenses were announced at Photokina 2016 but are not yet available) and the second 50mm lens after the Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. Here is the list of upcoming SL lenses:

  • Leica APO-Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 lens (not yet officially announced)
  • Leica Summicron-SL 35mm f/2 ASPH
  • Leica APO-Summicron-SL 75mm f/2 ASPH
  • Leica APO-Summicron-SL 90mm f/2 ASPH
  • Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 ASPH

Currently, there are three Leica SL lenses available for sale and in stock (one prime and two zooms):

By the end of 2018 there should be a total of eight Leica SL lenses (the rumored Leica APO-Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 lens is not pictured):

…why not round out the system more by introducing a wide prime first? Or actually getting the other “released” lenses to market?

    • Helge Drange

The previously announced primes (35, 75 and 90, all f2) and the zoom (16-34) will come within months. Wide prime(s) and long(er) lenses, plus macro and tilt/shift, would be great. Time will tell if and when…

How do you know- how many months? They are months late already. This is not the system I was expecting – at the wide end we are being very poorly served.

        • William Bridge

Do you own a SL ? I am curious about your current opinion.

          • Mr B

Yes, I have an SL. I also own all three of the currently available lenses.

        • Helge Drange

My comment is based on statements from visitors at Leica that the lenses are around the corner.

Seriously? Is it April 1st already? Announcing an 8th SL lens when the 3 that were announced 16 months ago are still nowhere to be seen. When will this one be available? 2020?

Are there any more new rumors lately for Leica products in 2018?

  • ZMWT

In 2016, Leica claimed those new smacking f/2 SL primes will come in 2017. But in 2017 they released total waste of effort “products” – horrific CL camera, the cat-eye ashtray 75/1.2, and the Thambar jello pudding lens.

    • William Bridge

I start to wonder what you do here. It is a rumor site about Leica but your comments are just critics. I don’t really like Sony for my own reasons but I don’t go on Sony forums to post critics on any post…

It’s his hobby horse, don’t mind him.

        I love his critiques:

“horrific CL,” which doesn’t mean anything at all, but sounds impressive. The only horrific part about the CL is the price, if it’s more than you want to spend.

“cat-eye ashtray 75/1.2,” that lens is smaller and lighter than Sigma’s 85/1.4, but never mind, let’s call it some absurd word salad to sound knowledgeable.

” Thambar jello pudding,” because ZM is shocked (shocked!) to find out that a lens renown for its pleasing softness is … (gasp!) … soft!

You have to admit that there’s great entertainment value in ZM’s whining.

        • William Bridge

I kind of agree with your last words haha. Cheers

I think the SL would be the perfect mirrorless platform. It is the best balance of build quality, usability and size vs. performance for a full-frame mirrorless system (although the body could be a just tad smaller/thinner for my taste). Next, they would just need to release small and fast prime lenses as well as a SL2 that is up to Sony A9 standards in terms of 1. focusing speed (phase detect/dual pixel) and 2. electronic shutter capabilities and 3. IBIS.

  • Does that mean, there will be a smaler and maybe more affordable alternative to the SL-Summilux … or will that be such über-good and pricy equivalent to the 50 f/2 für M-Mount?

  • Licheus

Pretty curious to see if the lens (with the APO badge) is gonna be placed above or below the 50/1.4.
