Dpreview’s L-mount alliance interview

Dpreview published another interview with Leica, Sigma and Panasonic on the new L-mount Alliance (recap from PhotoRumors):

  • No other companies have shown interest to join the L-mount Alliance so far
  • Each company involved is working on its own roadmap
  • Sigma was planning to develop their own full-frame mirrorless system, but eventually decided to join the L-mount
  • Panasonic’s current customer coverage is more high-level amateurs, not professionals. The L-mount will open the door to that top-end pro segment.
  • Sigma plans to develop APS-C lenses for L-mount, but full-frame is a priority
  • Panasonic will not develop APS-C lenses for L-mount
  • Quote: “A Leica price-point will always be a Leica price point”
  • Question: Is any money changing hands, or are you just bound by a common agreement?
Leica: We cannot comment on that, but think of it as a very friendly agreement.
  • Panasonic: the L-mount alliance is like marriage, the previous MFT arrangement with Olympus was more like we were just living together.
