Millimetric Design introduces draht: a Swiss-made grip shaped by balance, geometry, and restraint

Swiss-based design studio Millimetric Design (mmD) has quietly introduced draht_424[d], a minimalist camera accessory that approaches handling from an unusual direction: not by adding mass or complexity, but by reducing the object to its most essential function. Founded in London in 2023 and now split between England and Montreux, Switzerland, the studio works across objects, systems, and experiences, guided by a clear principle: making logic, form, and meaning speak the same language.

draht (German for “rod”) is a literal description rather than a brand name. The grip is made from a single piece of surgical-grade stainless steel (316L), cut to length and bent with precision. Its designation (draht_424, draht_438) refers directly to that length in millimetres, reinforcing the object’s straightforward, almost architectural honesty. There is no padding, coating, or visual distraction: one continuous rod that attaches to the camera at a single point and becomes part of the photographer’s natural grip rather than a separate component.

The idea behind draht did not start with aesthetics, but with use. Instead of sculpted grips or multi-part assemblies, the object relies on geometry, tension, and balance. After extensive iteration and material testing, stainless steel was chosen for its balance of strength, controlled flex, and corrosion resistance. Once mounted, the grip subtly influences how the camera settles in the hand, offering a more secure and composed feel without changing the camera’s character. In use, it snaps into place almost “like magic,” then quickly disappears into the act of shooting.

Installation follows the same logic as the object itself: 1-2-snap to install, push-pull-release to remove. There are no screws to tighten, no mechanisms to fail, and no adjustments to make. Everything depends on precision and repeatability, not intervention – an approach that leaves the object feeling closer to a tool than a product.

Alongside the grip, Millimetric Design has developed a system of interchangeable decorative inserts, allowing users to introduce personalisation over time. Currently offered in aluminium, future options will include leather, engineering plastics, different colours and finishes, as well as limited editions. The grip can be purchased bare and later upgraded, with inserts installed using a custom tool supplied in each package.

draht is currently available for Leica M10 and M11, with compatibility for Leica film cameras starting from the M6 planned next. Designed and manufactured entirely in Switzerland, the grip is produced with carefully selected materials and packaging, with attention given to longevity and environmental responsibility.

Aimed at photographers who value tactility, restraint, and mechanical honesty – qualities long associated with Leica cameras themselves, draht is not designed to stand out in a bag. Its purpose is quieter: to improve the relationship between hand and camera. As with many thoughtful accessories, its value becomes apparent not when looking at it, but when forgetting it is there.
