Watch this amazing footage of the moon taken with a Leica 400mm f/2.8 lens

This amazing video of the moon is called “World’s sharpest super-telephoto lens” and was shot with the Leica 400mm f/2.8 lens:

World’s sharpest super telephoto lens?

The video clips were filmed in August 2015 at only 290m above sea level (camping side in Germany). Some zooming in and out and spinning in post-production with Magix VDL 2016. Panasonic GH4 and a modified Leica 2.8/400mm + 1.4x + 2x + 2x Leica Apo Extender. I wanted to make the viewer feel like observing the moon from a spacecraft. I made some tests with a “Siemens Star” this summer, resolution = 1mm at 480m (0.43 arcsec)! This means 1200 lines/mm, of course wide open!

The Leica APO-TELYT-R 400mm f/2.8 lens can be purchase used at B&H Photo and eBay:

Leica to release a firmware update to fix dead/stuck pixels in the Q2 Monochrom camera

I received reports from readers about a potential dead/stuck pixel issue with the Leica Q2 Monochrom camera when shooting in high ISO (between 3,200 and 16,000). Identical problems were present on multiple cameras and there is even a thread on that topic at LUF. I was told that Leica will soon release a firmware update to fix this issue.

Funleader 18mm f/8 pancake/cap lens for Leica M-mount report

Funleader 18mm f/8 pancake/cap lens
Here is a quick report on the new Funleader 18mm f/8 pancake/cap lens for M-mount:

  • Got a “no lens attached error” on some Leica cameras – make sure you turn off the auto lens selection in the menu.
  • The lens doesn’t really click on the camera mount – you will have to push really hard to lock it into the mount. You may have to apply pressure when releasing the lens as well.
  • Very good build quality – as far as I can tell the lens is 100% metal built (aluminum).
  • Lens construction: 6 elements in 5 groups (multi-coated).
  • MTF chart:

  • Very strong vignetting is present, soft images, also plenty of distortion and ghosting.
  • The minimum focusing distance is 0.45m.
  • Very compact and light” 0.55 in / 14 mm thick and weighs only 40 g.
  • The lens is not rangefinder coupled.
  • No need to really manually focus the lens since at 18mm f/8 pretty much everything is in focus – the depth of field is 1.48ft / 0.45 m to infinity (you still have a small focusing scale for adjustments).
  • This lens is more for fun and to replace a missing camera mount cap (of course, you can always purchase cheap metal M-mount caps).
  • The best use of this lens in my opinion is for some fun/creative images and black and white photography.
  • With the Funleader 18mm f/8 lens, Leica M cameras are really “pocketable” because of the low profile of the lens:

  • Here is the Funleader 18mm f/8 lens packaging:

  • Additional pictures of the Funleader 18mm f/8 lens:
  • Some sample photos can be found on Flickr (SOOC JPG file: straight out of the Leica M9/M10R cameras):

Acuity comparison of Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 vs Summicron-M 35mm f/2 vs APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 lenses

Acuity comparison of Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 vs Summicron-M 35mm f/2 vs APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 lenses by Onasj (see all previous posts by Onasj):

Here’s a quick acuity comparison of three 35-mm focal length Leica-M lenses, all current versions:

  1. Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH ($5,995)
  2. Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH ($3,795)
  3. Leica APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH ASPH ASPH ASPH 😊 ($8,195)

Methodology: Tripod-mounted, M10-R, 2-second shutter delay, ISO 400, auto shutter speed, RAW. DNG files were opened in Adobe Camera Raw 13.1, auto-adjusted only, then cropped to 100% from the center and put side-by-side. Focus plane was the larger circle of black feathers (slightly behind the smaller circle), carefully focused in live view at 100% magnification.

Full scene:
