This could be a picture of the upcoming Leica C-Lux 20

A reader sent me a link to this photo on the new travel site which could be the new Leica C-Lux 20. If true, this confirms the previous information that it will be based on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 model. Of course this could also be the old Leica C-Lux 3 but that model did not have built-in GPS.

It still not clear what the V-Lux 20 model is all about (maybe a joke?). I only received information about an upcoming point and shoot camera, nothing else.

You can see many other pictures on http://travel.leica-camera.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/1.jpg by changing the file name from 1.jpg to 2.jpg, etc. S0me of the pictures are NSFW.

One of the new Leica camera testers speaks out

Nasser Kalaji was one of the photographers featured in the new Leica travel website. This is what he wrote on his blog today:

“April 2010 Immortal Entertainment is proud to announce the commencement of a collaboration with the world finest camera makers, Leica, chosen among 12 photographers around the world, Immortal now has in its possession Leica’s newest camera to test, and to showcase our photos in a a website exclusively designed by Leica for the promotion of its new camera.”

The post contains also multiple pictures from the new Leica camera (no EXIF data available).

EXIF data: Leica V-Lux 20

Going back to the new Leica travel website which seems to be based on a regular WordPress installation. If you look at one of the pictures uploaded on that site, the EXIF data shows “Leica V-Lux 20”:

Now, this name is slightly different from the expected Leica C-Lux 20, so I am not really sure what is going on here. Leica did have a V-Lux 1 model that was announced back in 2006.

You can see more pictures here and here – all taken with a Leica V-Lux 20.

The new Leica travel site is probably for the new Leica C-Lux 20 camera with buit-in GPS

My guess about the new Leica website is that it is launched in connection with the upcoming point and shoot camera Leica C-Lux 20. The C-Lux 20 will be based on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 which already has GPS geo-tagging capabilities. Look at the pictures on the site – they are not “M or S material”.

Of course the GPS coordinates could be added manually, but why create a new site with manually entered GPS data?

The Leica C-Lux 20 is expected to be released in the next 2-3 weeks.

New Leica website: “Cities. People. Perspectives.”

The new site is located at travel.leica-camera.com and it displays geo-tagged pictures taken with Leica cameras and a brief story about the photo and the photographer.

New custom plate for Leica M8/M9 from RRS

Just received an email newsletter from ReallyRightStuff – they are working on a custom plate for the Leica M8/M9 with an optional grip. Here are the details:

“Due to popular demand, Really Right Stuff is creating a custom plate for the Leica M8 and M9 cameras. This new Leica plate will be unlike any other ever made.

The passionate voices of our Leica shooters dictated a fresh approach to the design of this plate. Instead of a standard L-plate that mounts to the camera’s tripod socket, our plate actually completely replaces the Leica base. This replacement base will have an integrated dovetail for mounting in a Really Right Stuff clamp. Use the base alone as a conventional plate, or add an optional vertical component to create the L-plate. This vertical component will screw precisely to the base using our standard hex key tool.

Excited about this design, but still want to use a grip? No problem. Add our new optional grip; the grip will screw to the other side of the base plate.”

Leica C-Lux 20

Leica C-Lux 20 mockup

The latest rumor: in the next 30 days Leica will release a new point and shoot camera that will be based on the Panasonic ZS7 model (Leica will create its own housing for the new camera). The rumored model name will be Leica C-Lux 20. This is not really a surprise, since the Leica C-Lux 3 model has been discontinued for a while.

Not sure why Leica decided to go with C-Lux 20 model name instead of the expected C-Lux 4 model.

No word on the Leica 35mm Summilux-M replacement yet.
