This is the MS Optical Sonnetar 50mm f/1.1 MC lens

Japancamerahunter has posted all the details on the new MS Optical Sonnetar 50mm f/1.1 MC lens for Leica M mount and is now accepting pre-orders at ¥65,000 (around $830):

"It has a 2 layer multicoating on Tantalum glass. The German made iris is smooth with no click stops. It is a circular centre 14 blade iris, which should make for some very interesting and soft effects. The lens itself feels solid and has a nice weight of 190g on its own, or 220g as the set (hood and caps). The powder coated hood looks great on the lens too."

Lens specifications:

  • Sonnar type construction
  • 5 lenses in 4 groups with multi-coated surfaces
  • True focal length of 51.7mm
  • Lenses made of glass with ultra-high refractive index
  • Apertures: f/1.1 to f/16
  • Diaphragm is “made in Germany” (14 rounded blades from the pictures)
  • Lens weight 190g (220g with hood and caps)
  • Filter size M55
  • Coma Manual adjuster on rear element

Stupid question: are these cute MS Optical lenses rangefinder coupled?

    • Metapartikel

Not shure, but look on the second Picture it looks like its coupled.

    • Harry

      Yes, they are.

      • Ken

        Mine is not. Defect?

  • Huggs

1st word that came to mind is: Pretty. I think I will get one.

  • Hmm

I’m sorry but at 190g what is it made of? Plastic?

    • Aluminium. The lens design is simpler than some lenses of that spec and that saves the bulk of the weight.

  • I like how “MC” is in red just like how “T*” is written on Zeiss lenses 😀 And Sonnetar? *sigh*… I’m gonna call it Boringon Name-ar.

Good work, Miyazaki-san! Hope you make more lenses in the future.

Does each lens come with a handwritten leaflet? That would be exclusive! 😉

I’m curious to see the results, but fear that if you want one, you won’t have the luxury to wait for tests and will have to pre-order as soon as possible.

The Perar were truly unique lenses, but this lens is going to face some serious competition from Zeiss and Voigtländer,

I hope it will be a bit better than the first MS Optical lens, also a fast Sonnar-type 50mm, which was very soft wide-open.

Note: price is Y110,000. Y65,000 is for the pre-order deposit only.

    Looks sharp at f4.
F1.1 and 1.2 not so much.

As long as it isn’t held together with Loctite, I see a prolonged love affair with the out of focus areas of a Sonnar large aperture lens….

I have the 35mm lens. It’s very small and light, making the M9 almost pocketable. The corners are soft until 5.6, but above this the lens performs as well as my Zeiss 35mm f/2.8. This new 51.7 mm lens promises to be just as much fun, and useable in low light with a unique draw. I’m looking forward to it.

  • I have posted some test shots on my site now.

    • Thanks for the update Bellamy.

I got one about a week ago ,have shot it, it is,smaller then a summilux, & lighter too,I think, and other then the aperture changing as you focus, which may well be my fault as I’m getting my fingers used to finding the focus pin,and may have inadvertantly moved it while finding that focus pin, seems well behaved as a lens.shot wise its a light giant.twilight becomes daytime again. I posted some shots in my flicker. I have lots of 50,s, this one is special. i liked the bokeh of a S model 50,Nikkor- I have a liking of the summicrons & summiluxes., so price wise this is not impossible. Now, I’m waiting for the 1.3 lens,. I’ll probably, get that one too. This kind of optical exotica is exciting,.I also want to read some reviews by shooters to see what they think. Its going to be an expensive year.
