Leica UK announces support for award-winning charity PhotoVoice

Leica UK has made PhotoVoice its chosen charity for 2016, for the second year running.

PhotoVoice is an award-winning charity that works all over the world using photography in under-represented communities for positive social change. PhotoVoice’s participatory approach to photography contributes to their vision of a world in which no one is denied the opportunity to speak out and be heard.

Leica’s collaboration with PhotoVoice last year helped support their projects, and created a strong link between two organisations that share the belief that photography can cross cultural and linguistic barriers, and can be adapted to all abilities.

This year, Leica will be sharing information about PhotoVoice in its Mayfair and City-based stores, at events and exhibitions, and online to help raise awareness of the important projects that PhotoVoice delivers.

Jason Heward, managing director, Leica Camera UK, said of the partnership, “Leica is working with PhotoVoice to support its important projects such as ‘Having Our Say 3’, which works with young people affected by sexual exploitation and trafficking. We share the belief that photography can be one of the most powerful tools in changing perceptions and we look forward working with them again this year.”

Tom Elkins, chief executive officer for PhotoVoice, said, “Leica’s support makes a major difference to our work, and we’re thrilled that the strong relationship we established last year will continue. We’re looking forward to the next twelve months of partnership.”

PhotoVoice has worked all over the world building photographic, communication, and advocacy skills that enable people to tell their own story and share their perspectives. This can help work towards positive social change by developing strong partnerships with decision makers and the communities which are affected by them. Since being established as a charity in 2003, PhotoVoice has delivered more than sixty projects addressing issues including HIV, disability, conflict, political empowerment and others.
