Some additional information/rumors on the upcoming Leica VARIO-ELMARIT-SL 24–70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens (L-mount):

  • The Leica VARIO-ELMARIT-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens will be a part of a new “economy line” from Leica (not sure for the exact name of the new product line)
  • The official announcement should be in May
  • The VARIO-ELMARIT-SL 24–70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens will be offered together with the Leica SL2s camera as a set.
  • The lens will be priced just slightly higher than the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for L-mount (still under €3,000/$3,000?)
  • The lens will not have an all-metal body like other Leica SL lenses
  • The optics of the lens are rumored to be based on the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens
  • The design and construction will be very similar to the current Panasonic Lumix S PRO 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for L-mount:

Leica to announce a new VARIO-ELMARIT-SL 24–70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens

The next SL lens (L-mount) to be announced by Leica will be the VARIO-ELMARIT-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH according to Nokishita. Leica currently has the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH lens in their lineup that is often criticized because of its variable aperture – the new 24-70mm f/2.8 will be a welcome addition. Unless I am mistaken, the 24–70mm f/2.8 SL lens was not listed in any previous SL roadmaps, which means that we will probably get an updated roadmap as well.

Update – I received some additional information on the rumored/upcoming VARIO-ELMARIT-SL 24–70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens: it will be offered together with the Leica SL2s camera as a set. The optics of the new lens will be based on the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens (this is hard for me to believe – Leica will take a Sigma lens and put a red dot on top of it?)
