Leica US price increase coming on January 1st because of Trump’s new tax on European products

The Leica US price increase I reported a few months ago is going into effect on January 1, 2020. The Leica Q2 and SL2 prices will remain unchanged.  This price increase is triggered by the new Trump 25% US tax on select European products.

Leica Camera elevates the 2020 Leica Oskar Barnack Award

The Leica Oskar Barnack Award is adapting a new, nomination-based submission process to further heighten the prestige of the award. The Award will now consider finalists and ultimately select winners based on nominations from 70 world-renowned photographic experts from over 30 countries. With this nomination process, the honor of being chosen as a finalist is an esteemed accomplishment of its own, as they are recognized and hand-selected by some of the most respected figures impacting the world of photography.

In May, the jury will gather at the Leica Camera headquarters in Wetzlar to select the winner of the 2020 Leica Oskar Barnack Award. For the first time in the Award’s 40-year history, the winner will receive a prize of €40,000, in addition to a Leica camera worth €10,000.

Panasonic’s sale of their image sensor business did not impact TowerJazz

Two weeks ago, Panasonic announced that they will sell their image sensor business to Taiwan’s Nuvoton Technology for $250 million. Initially, there was some confusion about whether the sale will also include TowerJazz, which was part of the TowerJazz Panasonic Semiconductor Co. joint venture. TowerJazz issued a press release clarifying that the company is planning to keep their 51% share of TowerJazz Panasonic Semiconductor Co.:
