What about the Leica M12?

The Leica M12 and the upcoming Leica M11-V with EVF are two different models. I already reported that the rumored Leica M camera with EVF doesn’t mean the optical rangefinder is dead. The Leica M12 will be a classical digital rangefinder camera that is rumored to be announced in 2026.

The M12 trademark seems to have been abandoned by Leica (all Leica trademarks can be found here). If you search for “M12”, there are many already-approved “M12” trademarks. The Leica M12 trademark status in the United States Patent and Trademark Office is currently listed as “active”. Perhaps the next Leica model will not be called the M12?

Leica M11-V camera coming with a hybrid viewfinder like the Fuji X100/X-Pro?

The latest Leica M11-V camera leak indicates that there will be no “rangefinder window.” This likely refers to the small prism on the right front facade that provides the rangefinder (RF) patch. Note that the leak does not state that the large optical viewfinder, the one we look through with our eye, has been removed. Additionally, the leak mentions that the frame selector lever now has “dual functionality for the viewfinder.” This could mean that the M11-V will still have an optical viewfinder window, but with a frame selector lever that also activates the electronic viewfinder (EVF), while the rangefinder window is eliminated, and thus, the focusing patch is gone. Focusing will probably work as if a standard M11 is used with the back screen or with a Visoflex 2, which means focus peaking will become essential, but the optical viewfinder will still be available without the manual focusing patch. Perhaps the implementation will resemble the hybrid viewfinder found in cameras like the Fujifilm X100 and X-Pro. Here are some of the previously leaked pictures:
