Huawei P20 Pro guest post

This Huawei P20 Pro guest post is by Richard Wong, a Leica shooter and also a multi-award winning wedding photographer based in Auckland, New Zealand (InstagramFacebookYouTube):

I was recently invited to a product event by Huawei New Zealand which they launched their latest smartphone Huawei P20 / P20 Pro which has the world’s first triple Leica rear camera setup. On the same day, they also had a free public event called “Huawei P20 Fed Street Festival” which they have setup a stage on a public street here in the Auckland city centre with a line up of local artists performing from late afternoon all the way to the evening.

When I attend a product launch event, I usually would take some photos and this time I also wanted to take some videos. Originally my plan was to take one of my Nikon full-frame DSLR to capture some photos and my Panasonic G85 for videos. You just really can’t go wrong with that combo. I even thought of bringing my Leica M6 as well as I’ve just bought a few rolls of Kodak P3200 film so they should be great for the night event.

But I’ve also just received my Huawei P20 Pro review unit, I thought, what about if I leave all my big cameras home and just take the Huawei P20 Pro and use it to shoot both photos and videos. After all, P20 Pro’s triple Leica camera setup has smashed the DXOmark mobile camera score so it must be quite good?

So I left all my camera gears home and only took the smartphone with me to take photos/videos at a dark indoor venue (the product launch) and then I’ll shoot an outdoor night event and some live performance with high contrast, rapidly changing stage lighting.

What possibly could go wrong? Oh and it was 13th Friday, yeah Black Friday and weather forecast was heavy rain.

Instead of telling you what I think about the Leica camera on the P20 Pro, I’ll show you the photos and videos from that evening and let you be the judge. I’m still working on my proper review which will come to my youtube channel very soon with technical analysis but I can tell you the phone (and camera) easily survived a night of heavy rain and my shoulders thanked me for not having to carry a big camera bag walking around under the rain for half a day (or should I say half a night?)

Okay, I’ll go and work on my Huawei P20 Pro review now, but what do you think about the photos and videos from this pocket Leica camera? Feel free to leave a comment below. And thank you admin for inviting me to do this guest post!
