More reviews:
One thing to bear in mind – as mentioned – 7Artisans 35mm f/2 is not going to give you modern objectively perfect results. It’s a 7/5 Sonnar design, even if the results are different in the final version, they’re still not going to compare in the conventionally ideal image quality states to a asph-cron (for eg). On one hand what we do have here is shaping up to be a really nice entry level 35mm fast(ish) lens for those on a budget. On the other hand a lens that’s going to have stacks of character to please the likes of me. (35mmc)
This lens has character, and that’s not a euphemism for “it’s terrible”. Whether it is for you is more a question of preference than anything else and I suggest you scroll up and review the images I’ve posted again to see whether they float your boat. The 7artisans 35mm f/2 is not an optically perfect lens and nor should it be. Pixel peepers, if you’re looking for a lens that will give you perfect field curvature, zero barrel distortion, super-apochromatic transmission or asph-your-erical, this will likely not be the lens for you. BUT, if you’re looking for something with a bit of 味道 (wèidào), or taste/smell, as the Chinese put it, the 7artisans 35mm f/2 is definitely right up your street. (Emulsive)
I came into this review expecting a lens that would have passable center sharpness and pretty unusable corners after my review of the 50mm f/1.1, but I was quite pleasantly surprised by the excellent sharpness of this lens. Not only is the center sharp wide open, but the corners are pretty great as well. As with any lens it only gets sharper as you start stopping it down. The modern coatings on this lens give it great contrast in normal shooting conditions but it will lack for contrast a little more than some lenses when the lens is flaring. (Casey Cavanaugh)
The price of the 7Artisans 35mm f/2 lens will probably be lower than initially expected – most likely around $220-$250. Shipping to the US is expected to start in mid-May.
