Leica Images published their review of the glossy black Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH “Classic Line” lens ($5,000). Here is a quick recap:
- Lacquered glossy black brass construction with a vintage aesthetic
- Develops a natural brass patina over time
- Comes with a round, removable glossy black vintage-style lens hood that adds to the “bling”
- Feels special and cohesive on a black Leica M11 body
- Surprisingly sharp and crisp on the point of focus even at f/1.4, with excellent micro-contrast
- Rich, saturated colors and nice warmth in many scenes
- Some green fringing and flare in strong backlit situations (easily corrected in Lightroom/PhotoLab)
- Performs better than expected from a “classic” formula – a nice balance of vintage glow and modern usability
- Creamy, smooth, cinematic bokeh that “melts” backgrounds into a watercolor-like wash
- Natural, gradual fall-off with beautiful 3D pop and subject separation
- Avoids the harsh, nervous, or double-edged bokeh of some modern lenses
- Gives images an immediate cinematic atmosphere and timeless human quality
- Sample photos
- Conclusion:
I Bought It for Looks, I Kept It for Character
Stepping away from the predictable world of clinical sharp perfect lenses was a gamble for me, but it’s one that completely paid off. The Leica 50mm Summilux Classic Line proved to me that photography isn’t about chasing perfect razor sharp images, it’s about capturing a mood.
Whether it was pulling incredible, tack sharp detail out of a fleeting profile on a sidewalk or rendering a heavy, gritty scene in a dark alley, this lens delivered something modern glass completely lacks; a distinct, unmistakable character. ( I could use the word soul but it gets overused ). It forced me to stop pixel peeping and start focusing on the feeling of the frame. If you’re looking for a sterile, corrected tool, look elsewhere. But if you want a lens that renders with character, depth, and a timeless human element, this classic formula is the real deal.
I’m officially a believer.
Pros
- Stunning aesthetics and matching finish.
- Excellent balance of vintage character with usable sharpness and contrast.
- Beautiful, smooth bokeh and natural depth.
- Versatile across portraits, street, still life, and everyday shooting.
- Creates images with mood and feeling rather than sterile perfection.
Cons
- Minor green fringing/flare in challenging backlit scenes (correctable).
- Not for photographers who want the most clinically sharp, “perfect” modern rendering.
- Backgrounds can occasionally look slightly busy at certain apertures/settings.
