Leica SL3 sensor dynamic range test

A reader (thanks @aljawad) sent me two photos demonstrating the dynamic range of the new 60MP sensor inside the Leica SL3 camera:

“I picked up my Leica SL3 from the Dubai Leica store last week, and for the past few days I used it with the Vario-Elmar 100-400mm for some bird photography (some of the results are on my IG @aljawad).

This evening I changed to the APO-ASPH 35mm Summicron lens and performed my usual low light test. First I set the ISO to 50 and the camera to aperture priority (at f/2) + auto white balance, and the camera set the shutter speed to 2 seconds. Next, I switched to the manual mode and underexposed the image by 5 stops to a shutter speed of 1/15 second. Using Lightroom the exposure of the underexposed image was boosted by a factor of +5.

Here are the images: the first one is the 2-sec exposure followed by the 1/15 second “dark” exposure and finally the boosted underexposed image. Other than the exposure boost and the DNG to JPEG export, no other manipulations were made.”

First test picture (normal exposure):

Second picture (underexposed):

The same underexposed picture from above edited in Lightroom (exposure +5):

From Reddotforum:

“60 Megapixel BSI CMOS Sensor: Headlining the changes, the Leica SL3 is now packing the same cutting-edge 60 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor we’ve seen on the M11 and Q3. With an ISO range of 50-100,000 and an amazing 15-stops of dynamic range, this chip delivers next-level image quality. Just like on the M11, expect a bump in low light performance along with the increased resolution. This is made possible by utilizing BSI technology.”

Here are a couple of details from the original two images images. In each of the following pairs the first crop is from the camera-exposed 2-second image, while the second crop is from the manual 5-stop underexposed image:

The previously rumored Leica Summilux-M 35 f/1.4 in black anodized limited edition lens is now officially announced:

“The Leica Summilux-M 35 f/1.4 from 1961 is still as popular as ever. In particular, the black edition with its characteristic silver front ring known as the “Steel Rim” has become a coveted collector’s item, in part owing to a very small production run. Now, in honor of this unique lens, we introduce a new special edition, limited to 200 units.:

New Leica M11-D camera and Leicavit rumors

Leica is rumored to announce a new Leica M11-D camera (this is the model without an LCD screen). The official announcement should happen later in 2024, but I am not sure about the exact date.

The new M11-D will not have the fake advance lever (“integrated fold-out thumb rest”) the M10-D had. For fans of the lever, you can now add a third-party foldable thumb rest for Leica M10 + M11 cameras:

Leica is also rumored to bring back the Leicavit in chrome and black (not sure if it’s black paint, black chrome, or maybe both). The price is expected to be around €1,050 and the official announcement is expected in 2024.

Some Leicavit models are currently selling for over $2,000 on eBay. There are also third-party manufacturers like Akagivit:

The Leica D-Lux 8 will not have an APS-C sensor and a fixed prime lens (obviously)

Some people seem confused or just plain clueless when it comes to Leica camera product lines and nomenclature. Publishing articles with headlines like these is just plain s****d:

“New Leica D-Lux 8 is coming in May/June and compete with the Fuji X100VI.”

“Leica D-Lux 8 Specs LEAKED: The APS-C Competitor to Fujifilm X100VI Coming May/June”

Obviously, the reported D-Lux 8 specs are also all made up. I cannot believe that I have to state the obvious, but the upcoming Leica D-Lux 8 camera will NOT have an APS-C sensor and a fixed prime lens.

In my first post I clearly explained the situation with the upcoming D-Lux Type 3952A camera:
